Has this been documented anywhere in an interview or book? Sorry if this has been discussed before, but I didn't find anything from searching. I imagine it only contributed to his downward spiral.

I don't know of any comments made by Hannett about New Order's success.

However, it seems possible that it may have rankled him a bit.
Hannett was certainly annoyed by the way Factory treated him and, considering how deeply integrated New Order were with the record label, there's a definite possibility that some of the ire he felt for Factory may have bled through to the band.

But, as I said, I've never specifically read any criticism by him of them.
He rarely seemed to do interviews and, as we all know, had some significant problems in his later years.

There are a few books which might go into detail.
I have these, but admit that I've never read them:

Who Killed Martin Hannett?: The Story of Factory Records' Musical Magician (Colin Sharp)
Martin Hannett - Pleasures Of The Unknown (Chris Hewitt)
Martin Hannett, His Equipment and Strawberry Studios (Chris Hewitt)

I have to be honest and say that I'm not a big fan of the author of the second two books. He's been flogging the Hannett/JD 'dead horse' for a long time. THere's been a lot of criticism of him over the years by fans, especially over at Joy Division Central.

I recall him saying something to the effect of "Ideally, bands should produce themselves". I'm not aware of him commenting on specifc tracks.

Yeah, I'd hate for it to be conjecture since Hannett can not speak for himself.
