I just got done listening to the Irvine Meadows, San Bernadino, CA Sept 1987 concert from the Substance 2023 Edition. I have 2 questions for any fortunate souls who attended this concert:

1) Who was the guy doing the announcing/commentary in between some songs? (He says the most before the first, Ceremony).
2) Hooky's bass is really blown-out sounding at times. Was that really how the gig was, or did it sound better? I've attended enough NO/The Light concerts to know that usually his bass sounds great.

Tony Wilson of Factory Records does the band intro. Most of the between-song banter is Peter Hook.

A soundboard recording is a balance of instruments that need to be boosted from the mixing desk and the natural amplification and reverberation of the venue. Guitars may not be as loud in the mix because the higher frequencies cut through the air from the amplifiers on stage, versus bass, which generally needs to be boosted in outdoor environments. It's just a stereo mix straight to cassette, not a multitrack recording where they can go into a studio and fiddle with it afterwards.

Very late to this topic, but one funny note is that Irvine Meadows is not in San Bernardino. It's in Orange County, which is about 50 miles away.

I was born and raised here--and my very first concert was New Order with openers The Sugarcubes and PIL in 1989 at Irvine Meadows. It was incredible.

I was at that one as well. Missed most of the Sugercubes set because of the traffic.
