Fuck, that's a toughie. I once saw a Betty Boo (phwoar) comp and the question was something like:
Which cartoon character has a name like Betty Boo? (a) Betty Boop, (b) Fred Flintstone, (c) Felix The Cat.
You deserve a prize just for sitting through Steve Wright.
'93 was all sizzle and no steak. It LOOKED really cool - interviews, docs, journos spouting shite like, 'Arguably the most important UK band since the Beatles or the Rolling Stones' (HUH?)... But in reality? A handful of expensive, predictable gigs, with only one on the UK mainland; a bland, late album, spawning endless mixes and only the occasional gem; a later, blander offshoot spawing one single with lines like, 'Someone I hate / She thinks she's great.' We fell for the hype but it was the beginning of the end, and when they disappeared again it was just having your cake and eating it.

Yeah i remember all that best band since The Beatles kind of stuff from journalists in 1993 when actually Republic was mostly naff. The journalists probably hadn't even listened to the album and were still basing NO's greatness on Technique from 4 years previously.

I remember the Radio 1 evening session had interviews over consecutive nights with New Order and previewing tracks from Republic a week or two before its release.Think it was Mark Goodier interviewing and you got Hooky on Monday night, Barney on Tuesday night, and Steve and Gillian on Wednesday night each unveiling tracks. My mood throughout the evenings as they went on sunk lower and lower as we were first exposed to headache inducers like World, Ruined In A Day and Chemical.

Ruined in a day is pretty good, no? Republic had a few gems, a few stinkers....just like most albums. However, NO's stinkers are so bad I can only listen to them a couple of times. And then never again. I'm thinking here of track two on Lost Sirens, which I charitably tried to give another chance on my way home on Friday. It won't get a third.

I remember hearing Ruined In A Day on the radio (maybe Radio 1?) one day at work in summer 1993 and thinking yeah this is good but probably only because everything else Radio1 played was so shit.Best track on Republic is Avalanche (ok maybe Regret).Avalanche is the only song to truly stir the emotions from that album IMHO (ok maybe Regret also, and possibly Special) .Somehow captured the sad fact the 80s glory days of New Order and Factory was over but at the same time held some hope ("Faith") for the future.
