I’m not as far through the book as you, but I’m absolutely loving it. I’ve only just got to the Warsaw era.
Steve has a lovely relaxed style of writing and, as expected, is full of his wit and humour. Although I enjoyed Hooky’s books, I found his grammar and writing style a little awkward in places. Like he was writing as he speaks. Not so with Steve’s, which flows really well.
One of the many things I like so far about the book is the way that he peppers the text with photos to support his statements. Like the notice in ‘Shy Talk’ fanzine about Warsaw wanting a drummer or the cover of the Rudolph Hess book that Barney was reading that instigated that (in)famous line. Interesting to note that that line (which came back to haunt them many times) only came about due to the fact that there were three microphones of stage, ready for the next band on the list.
As a self-confessed Uber-geek Of JD/NO, this sort of stuff is wonderful. But geekiness aside, it also helps to break down the text, literally illustrates Steve’s points and helps us connect with the author.
Loving it so far. Back to the reading...

Finished the book. Really enjoyed it. Looking forward to volume 2 next year and Steve covering the New Order years. Though he covers the start of New Order and the September 1980 trip to New York in the last chapter of this one. Thought it’d made more sense to leave that til his New Order book? Either he’s going to repeat himself at the start of volume 2 or he’s going to start after the New York trip?
Interesting that The Doors’ ‘The End’ randomly came into his head just hours before he learnt the news about Ian Curtis. Debbie Curtis had dreamt about listening to the same song earlier that morning . A strange coincidence that Steve acknowledges and mentions in the section.

This is far too Trainspottery for me. The doctor says I only have 35 years to live.

Steve was on BBC Radio 4 A Good Read with Harriet Gilbert (no relation) yesterday, much to my surprise. He chose one book and commented on the two Harriet and guest Pippa Evans chose. Books were: 1. The Shepherd's Hut by Tim Winton 2. This Is Memorial Device by David Keenan 3. The Story of Lucy Gault by William Trevor Whose chose what? - you decide. Actually, he did very well, Michael (only mentioned the book once), strung a couple of sentences together and turns out to have read the only Tim Winton novel I have read: Dirt Music. Top man. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0005mkl

John Lennon to Ian Curtis: I know you're depressed, but nothing to get hung about.
