Fom an article in the Norwich Evening News - https://www.eveningnews2...ould-get-release-8407950

An Anglia Square gig from seminal 80s indie band New Order could be immortalised almost 40 years after it took place.

On May 24, 1982, the indie dance pioneers performed a concert at the now-defunct Pennies venue in Norwich's Anglia Square.

The concert saw the band perform tracks from the albums Movement and Power, Corruption and Lies, as part of one of the first tours as New Order - with the band having risen from the ashes of Joy Division.

And cassette recordings from the concert had been due to go under the hammer earlier this month, as part of a collection belonging to bassist Peter Hook.

The auction, which was held by Warrington-based auctioneers Omega, included a wide range of collectables from the bass player's personal collection, including bass guitars, awards statues and items of clothing.

However, just before the auction was due to begin on Friday, October 8, the cassette collections - including the Norwich gig recordings - were withdrawn from the sale.

The cassettes were part of a wide collection of recordings from mixing desks of New Order concerts and include some rehearsal footage.

But Mr Fairweather said: "I have been told that they were actually withdrawn at the request of the label so that they can perhaps use them in potential future releases."

Should this happen, it would allow fans to relive the concert almost 40 years after it was held - while also hearing how the band sounded in its early years.

Won't happen. Would've been considered for the Movement or Power, Corruption & Lies boxes if the recording was any good. This sounds more like a blanket answer from the lawyers. "Could harm potential sales" blah blah.

Yep. This was my thought too.
It's probably just a standard statement and helps to justify the band/label's decision to stop the items being auctioned. Makes them seem less petty / vindictive.

I'm not saying that the band or label were being petty or vindictive though. I think they probably had good reason to stop the sales.
After all, if they were sold, what would stop anyone trying to make money out of them?
It's also far easier to just put a stop to the release rather than individually vet each CD/tape, just in case Bernard etc. happened to say a few naughty things on them.

Besides, "potential future releases" is not incorrect. Some of the stuff on those tapes will probably end up released at some point, so could harm sales.
Unlikely to be Pennies though; as £50note points out, that ship has probably sailed.

But it's a shame. I'd love if Pennies 1982 was released in its entirety. Or, indeed, anything else on those tapes.

Cheers for the article though, surface. We can but hope.

Has appeared on various bootlegs over the years (in varying degrees). Significant for being the live debut of 586.

Someone should tell them we've already put one track out on the DVD of the Movement box.

General question about this footage and the other 'one track only' footage used on the Glasgow DVD, Movement/PCL boxes.

Just wondered what the reasoning behind only including one or two tracks?

Was it:

a) Only the tracks included were of 'broadcast quality'?
b) Only the tracks included existed in the archives?
c) Were only one or two tracks used due to space, and to just give us a 'flavour' of what multiple gigs were like?

Perhaps it was a combination of all of the above.

I'm hoping that, when we get the Low Life set, Steve (or someone else) gives us a few more 'bonus tracks', like he did on that Gorilla TV interview.

Talking of which, any news on this yet, please? Wink

Mostly C, but occasionally A and/or B. I thought it would be nice to showcase some other bits we had as extras. It is also a way to cover tracks that might not be totally represented in the main gigs. For ones like LWTUA at Birmingham I reckoned that would be something that the fans would love to see as it meant a lot at the time.

Thanks for the answer, but most of all thanks for all the work you put into these collections.
It is very much appreciated.

I know DigiMike was especially pleased by the inclusion of LWTUA at Birmingham, as he was there.
What a special moment, captured for posterity.

Off-topic, but I love that series. Up there with The Young Ones and Fawlty Towers. Notice that all these series ended after the second bout, before they could go shit.
Is anyone seriously expecting this to happen?

I love Partridge, and especially that series.

In fact, that scene mentioned above contains my favourite line by the character ever:

"It was my understanding in the lift that no money would change hands."

You don't need to see that conversation to know just how bloody awkward it would've been. Great writing indeed.

What's the difference between money and a masturbator? Money might change hands.
Yeah, great series.
