Was there a topic on the old site about the errors loaded in these reissues? I've been searching all over the place for it and have had no luck.


I just wanted to share this photo. Even if they don't have errors in it, what I have heard from these reissues they are extremely terrible. My friend bought the Low Life version and lucky for him his 2nd disc was not infected. (I still have all of my QWest original print versions of the albums, including Power Corruption & Lies that had The Beach and Blue Monday on the album). I wanted to share this picture.

The only N.O. album I have been missing all these years is Technique, and I spent 17 dollars on a brand new QWest version (I guess they are hard to find now) and I don't regret going after these Rhino remasters one bit, even if they are not full of errors, the loudness is absolutely terrible. Nothing beats the original mastering of Low Life, Power, Corruption, & Lies, or Substance. Rhino also destroyed the Depeche Mode albums with their crappy remasters throwing in a bonus DVD to get you to buy it in a fancy Digipak, and funny thing is, my version of People Are People the booklet wasn't even stapled correctly.


But you can look at the screenshot above I made in audacity. Everything is drowned out in loudness. Besides The Rolling Stones 2009 UMe reissues, these are perhaps the worst loudness remasters I've ever come across, but the Rolling Stones newest reissues are a bit worse.

I just received the fixed Low-Life remaster without the drop out in Sunrise. The actual album doesn't sound too bad. I agree that the bonus discs are still mastered pretty poorly but are the actual album remasters that bad? I remember the original |Low-Life cd sounding pretty thin. I could be wrong. I'd be interested to know which are the best versions to get. I have the original Factory Cd's. Are they any good?

I don't know how the actual disc sounds but I assume that if the remaster is this loud, the original disc will be too.


They sound terrible like the new Rolling Stone remasters. I wasted 40 bucks on tons of those new Stones remasters only to find out they were worthless and everything was lost in the loudness. Sticky Fingers is perhaps the worst, the organ in I Got the Blues just drowns everything out.


Rhino did these remasters, and that's why they are super loud. The Depeche Mode reissues some years back they did that had the bonus dvds were also terrible. Here is a screenshot I did of People of People comparing the original Sire records version to the Rhino remaster

I have never bought any of the Factory original pressings, but I'd highly recommend the original pressings from QWest records (What we get here in the U.S.) I have almost all of them, once Technique comes in the mail I will, and the sound quality is amazing. I'm disappointed cause I really wanted the 2 disc version of Power, Corruption and Lies only for the original 12" of Confusion, but if they are this loud errors or not, I'm not wasting 20 bucks on that.

It's really funny that despite all these super cool remasters we get today, the original pressings of CD's sound so much better. I'd trade all my Stones and Judas Priest reissues for the original first pressings of the cds. The Jimi Hendrix remasters are louder than the originals but there is a fine line between that and the Rhino reissues. While Hendrix reissues are louder, not everything is drowned out in utter loudness.

Perhaps you could explain exactly what you think you've proved with this screenshot? What does this show? I don't think you know what you're looking for when you do this.

What I can see is a track that, apart from being slightly longer at the end, is just a bit louder (normalized even). Maybe a couple of the original peaks have been lightly limited and pretty much ALL of the original dynamics appear to have been preserved.

The (fixed) double disc editions are not 'drowned out in loudness', they have 'some' limiting, but it isn't too excessive. Try a screenshot of the 'Singles' double to see some actual bad limiting.

I'm showing you how all the music is lost in loudness with the high dynamics. The top one is the way it's supposed to look. The bottom is longer, because it's the album version of the song, and I used the album 'People are People' with the shorter version (Without the outro)


In the first screenshot where I used the Low life bonus disc version of Shell Shock, something is really wrong there. A song should not be lost in such high loudness dynamics. These aren't the only ones.

What I'm saying 'Nightmare' is that I get it, but I don't think YOU do. Maybe you need to do a little more research before commenting on something you've hardly understood.

The Shellshock example does show a certain amount of limiting, though it's not too bad, the Depeche Mode one however has hardly any, yet you think it does. The signal being normalized is not in itself a problem.
