Obviously the reanimated Manchester legends could be coming up with something a cut above the satisfactory rock they've churned out periodically over the last 20 years, but don't bet your die-cut 'Blue Monday' sleeves on it. That's the thing about getting the old band back together – the creative impetus tends to wither when you've got all that lovely back catalogue to plunder. Since their reunion two years ago – four years after splitting permanently with Peter Hook – New Order have only seen fit to release 'Lost Sirens', a selection of out-takes from their last proper, lacklustre album 'Waiting For The Sirens' Call'. Hardly the action of a band overflowing with confidence at their capacity for sharp new material. But maybe they'll turn around and hit us full in the face with half a dozen new 'Thieves Like Us'-es. Not read the NME in years, but the last issue I checked out was a pale shadow of the once excellent music weekly, with articles seemingly written by - and aimed at - attention-span-deficit 13 year olds.
Anyway.... in answer to the question:
"Do we really want new music from New Order?"
I'd say "The NME and it's current readership may not, but some people do, yes."
I do, but I'm also hoping for something a bit more exciting than Lost Sirens (although I quite like most of Waiting for the Sirens Call - I actually prefer it to to Get Ready.)

I think the NME needs to look closer to home if it wants to find something that's past its best and now merely a shadow of its heyday.

bad lieutenant and lost sirens and numerous assorted unknown , to me ,singles (brutal,miracle cure,such a good thing etc.) emerged and filled in nicely. they are again in the studio with numerous ideas, so instead of searching for newish music on you tube or expecting anything remarkable by any other old band , or trusting a friend's suggestions ; i trust bernard , steven, gillian, phil, and tom to create interesting, brilliant new songs , and continue until they cannot, many, many years from now. those that libel new order have an enormous army of fans to deal with. nme may pick on u2, or bob dylan, or fleet foxes, but insulting new order is blasphemy. |

If the NME want to sneer they should do so at the bands who have got back together and have not made any attempt to write new music. I am thinking of bands like The Pixies who have been on the reunion trail since 2004 and have recorded one new song in the meantime. I just hope New Order will release some new material this year and that we don't have to wait until 2016 for new tunes.
Speaking of band reunions, how long before REM get back together...

Totally depends on the quality of the music. If it's shit or even just ok, then maybe it's time to stop. If it's good then I'm sure we'll all be thrilled. Let's hope the lyrics on the first new song they release don't start with...

Unless New Order releases something new by the end of the year, that will be two years of oldies, not exactly a sign of an inspired band. On the other hand, why dis New Order for at least trying new material, unlike Pavement and the Pixies? They are not optimistic that the new music will be good. Bad Lou was mostly ignored, will the latest New Order be worthy of attention or an embarrassment? I presume with The Pixies there are issues between certain members of the band to contend with and maybe that is why Frank Black continues to record as a solo artist between tours with his old band who when they tour go through the motions on stage and then go their separate ways with their hefty paychecks afterwards. Actually it is quiet possible for all that we know that if New Order had not reconvened last year Bernard would have go on to make that album with Stuart Price which was once rumoured to be in the pipeline..

their main rivals, u2, and the bunnymen have been in my opinion boring, nearly unlistenable , for 10 years. bernard and mates ,alternatively, have released numerous songs that have gotten at least 1000 listens by me in that same time. and compared to mccartney , dylan, stones, clapton,and dozens more of my beloved music makers, bernard has outdistanced himself from all to a stellar degree. the young man is blessed, very much a favorite of the son of god. there will be more songs of the very same standard . |

I couldn't care less about the NME anymore. I used to read it, but its just pretentious hipster bullshit. I mean, they are so bad now and have such a declining readership they had to put Rhianna on the front cover. That was an awful issue anyway, especially Jack Whites bit.
They can say what they want, but at least New Order are going to record something, rather than nothing.
