Which songs do you guys think have Peter Hook's best performance/best bass-line be it best technically, or most evocative emotionally, etc.?

I'm sure many of you hate the bastard now but you can always put aside grudges and admire the unique sound he gifted New Order and Joy Division.

For me it has to be "The Perfect Kiss", specifically the 12" version. First that rigid, funky intro followed by those impossibly lofty high notes, his sweeping, yet rich bass during the chorus, and finally that outro. That outro is all kinds of epic, falling, rising, and stomping to a resounding finish. (Turns out "The Perfect Kiss" is the perfect song.)
I know Peter Hook is an excellent, and, likely, surprisingly imaginative bass player but I do have a hard time believing he came up with that bass-line, but maybe I shouldn't.

A close second for me is "Dead Souls". I can hardly believe that it was a B-side to Atmosphere which is also another great song. (Shows you the talent that band had) but "Dead Souls" had a powerful spark to it, and a bridge and bass solo that I can only dream to write.

Runner-ups: A lot of the tracks on the album Get Ready actually contain some really impressive bass-lines from Hook; somehow his bass playing became even more prominent on the two later albums Get Ready and Waiting For The Sirens Call . "60 mph", "Primitive Notion", and "Morning Night and Day" are stand outs for me.

It changes every day probably but you mentioning TPK certainly sounds about right to me, but then that only works so well because its part of the, ahem, crescendo of the others.

Who uses words like 'crescendo'? Worra wanker.

No one who has an issue with Hookys behaviour lately should ever denigrate his playing i dont think.

As Coops said it does change every day but if i had to pick 6 now id say in no particular order.... Digital, The Perfect Kiss , True Faith, All Day Long, Weirdo and Leave me alone.

In addition to the tracks already mentioned, some standouts for me are: "Love Will Tear Us Apart", "Ceremony", "Age of Consent", "This Time of Night", "Sunrise", "Elegia", "Sub-Culture", "Face Up", "Let's Go", "Paradise", "1963", "Love Less", "Run", "Regret", "Close Range", "Such a Good Thing", and "Waiting For the Sirens' Call".

Right I totally forgot about Sunrise. Another well crafted bass line, with a great bridge/outro.

"Sunrise" certainly is one of the strongest, it sounds superb.

Personally, I like so much his bass parts on a) "From Safety to Where" and b) "Sub-culture" (album version).

Honorable mention to "Disorder" and "Guilty Partner".

Also of note are his riffs in "Blue Monday"...really, really tasteful licks that counterbalance everything.

Well this could run like diarrhea, but yeah, TPK is the obvious choice. I also think Primitive Notion would be up there with 24 Hours and Sunrise if the lyrics were stronger... And while Movement is no one's fave, I like the bass especially in Chosen Time.

TPK and Let's Go for me, but let's face it, the guy is one hell of a bass player. Pity nobody thinks about what an amazing contribution he made these days.

What I still don't get... is why they ever went for the "one vocalist, one front man" approach.
