http://www.manchestereve...pecial-new-order-4873464

When he was a child, New Order’s drummer Stephen Morris used to look out of his back garden across the hills to the Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank – and imagine.

“They built it in the year I was born,” says Stephen. “It was always a bit mysterious – what does a radio telescope do? It was communicating with space and it was just down the road.”

As is the case for all gigs at Live From Jodrell Bank, New Order will get to do something special with the iconic landmark – weather permitting. A bit of wind could spoil their fun, says frontman Bernard Sumner, but they remain optimistic that a fine day awaits them.

It should; since the band came back from hiatus in 2011 – surrounded by a storm over the absence of founder member and bassist Peter Hook – there has been a special drive and energy in the ranks. Original keyboardist Gillian Gilbert remains on board, while Tom Chapman takes on bass duties and Phil Cunningham completes the live set up on synths.

They form a friendly circle in the Lovell’s shadow on the day we meet, a tight unit laughing about global travel and reflecting on the dramas they’ve seen during their 37 year creative friendship. They know how lucky they are to still be here, to watch generation after generation stand on their front row, introduced to New Order and Joy Division by an older sibling or parent, and to have played on every continent in the world except Africa.

They’ve overcome grief, debt and addiction to get here (“When something major has happened,” says Gillian, “we’ve just got on with our own thing, then picked the band back up.”) and Bernard, too, recognises 2013 is a fine time for New Order.

“All the other tours have been pretty semi comatosed really,” he laughs. “So maybe I’ve noticed how fresh things are this time because of that?

“Having new people helps; a key factor for me is we’re all pushing in the same direction. Imagine you’ve got Manchester United and one of the strikers doesn’t want the other one to score because he thinks he’s the only striker that should be allowed to score. It’s not going to work out very well, is it?

“We’re not in that situation any more, I hope – we all play for the same team and all wish each well and success.”

It’s about all Bernard has to say about Hookygate. But then, he always was focused on going forward; next on the giant to do list is a new album, one that Bernard says is back in love with the synth sound that was a signature of the band’s early singles: True Faith, Blue Monday, Temptation and Ceremony.

“The last few albums have been very guitar based, and the reason for that was to take a holiday from electronic music,” Bernard explains.

“I personally didn’t like the way it had split off and you had to be in one of these genres – music’s not about that, it’s about freedom. We just felt a bit over familiar with electronics, so I think on this album we’re purposely trying to embrace electronics again.”

If that’s a surprise, just wait to see what they’ve got in store for Jodrell. “We’ve talked about Johnny Marr joining us,” says Bernard about his former Electronic band mate, who performs on Sunday before New Order.

“He played with us in Las Vegas in a hotel called The Cosmopolitan in front of a pool, and from the stage we could see the Eiffel Tower, to the left Ancient Rome... Steve wants to live there, there’s a hotel he wants to buy that looks a bit like an old people’s home.”

Stephen laughs. “It’s going to be a David Lynch like hotel, with rooms dedicated to dead celebrities and with tellys you’re allowed to throw out of the room,” he deadpans.

“Janis Joplin room, Jim Morrison, the Gram Parsons suite - that’s my own personal favourite.”

I promise to make you so alive that the fall of dust on furniture will deafen you. Nina Cassian

Yea he did, was a great gig in a great venue, they projected some stuff onto the dish itself. Was a great set, which included shadow play in he encore, they also played one off lost sirens.

Yes Barney joined Marr for GAWI. Pretty spectacular visuals projected on to the dish during N0's set. Giant disco ball effect during Temptation

It was an amazing day / night. Really enjoyed all the sciece things they had going on. Saw a bit of jake Evans, most of the whip. Not a huge johnnycake marr fan but enjoyed his set, the obvious highlight for me being getting away with it with Barney joining him. The smiths tracks went down really well.

Then the mighty order, what amazing set heighened by the brilliant light show. Everyting just fell into place, hot weather, the atmosphere etc, one of the great new order moments. Even enjoyed the joy division encore (would normally prefer new order to play new order). Every track hit home and really pleased my 7 year old daughter got to see them in such a brilliant setting. Brilliant day thank you new order here to stay sounded poignant they are on fire. Hopefully this will urge them on to write some great new stuff

Yep, great day. Fantastic weather, lovely setting.Good to see loads of old faces. Glad i went now, only decided to go when i woke up Sunday morning.Nipped up on the train and got a ticket off a tout for £30 which was £10 cheaper than face value.ResultSmile

Caught The Whip and chuffed i saw Public Service Broadcasting - their between song banter was hilarious as it was all recorded/sampled/computerized talkie bits chopped together to say stuff like "Hello. Jodrell (long pause.......) Thanks. For (long pause.....) Coming".Johnny Marr was ok but didn't really do much for me.

Was downing the special "Blue Monday" ale most of the afternoon and evening.

The visuals projected onto the dish during NO's set were fab, really took off after sundown.

Loads of great photos here including one or two of Barney arriving by helicopter

There seemed to be a lot of filming going on of the show . That boom camera kept swinging out over the crowd a hell of a lot. Would make an entertaining DVD with all the spectacular visuals onto the dish and the unique setting of the venue.

What an amazing day. It was like a weird village fete.

Cool venue, great line-up, each band building the vibe, fast service at the bar, amazing light show, massive Viking turn out & all drenched in summer sun. Then there was New Order.

Since New Order returned in '01, their greatest gig?

What band is Johhny Marr a part of now? What was the purpose of this gig? Is he coming with a new album or something? Just wondering...from a long time Smiths/Electronic fan who admittedly *hasn't* been keeping up with Marr news.

He already has a solo album out, so Johnny's been touring these days.

Short clip i recorded on my phone and uploaded to YouTube just now. The pre encore music and visuals. The pulsar lights emanating from the centre of the dish kind of connect to the Unknown Pleasures graphic forming on the on stage visuals. Cosmic!

Apologies however, i should have flipped my phone horizontal to record the clip. Will remember that next time! DOH

Apparently Steve played a big part in creating the visuals projected onto the dish.Wonder if the music playing pre encore that accompanied the visuals was something Steve knocked up at home?

Bernard arriving by Helicopter when the edge is 10 mins away, rock n roll bro.Could have given him a lift as had lunch at the de trafford in Alderly,Giggys drove past in his Range rover,, window open of course.

Realy enjoyed Johny Marr, realy clean Guitar work what a highlight Bernard from E lectronic joining him on stage.. the last two songs were pearless.

And so to the Order..............what a backdrop,, what inspired visuals, and yes Tom played great Bass,, loved it they introduced songs (shadowplay, world) that dont always get a RUN out.

Some girl was so pised at the end she just had to crack her head in front of us,, sister order got first aid,, some headache in the morning sunEek
the down points..... the twat security that wouldt let me turn right to Alderly and sent me round half of cheshire, home at 3 nearly like the HacWink

Thats the price of love
