I still don't really know what Decades is about even after all these years but it endlessly intrigues me.Did Curtis even know himself? He was apparently from what i've read in some kind of trance when he wrote it (and The Eternal).I'm long familiar with the feelings Decades draws up within each time i listen to it but find it difficult to put those feelings into words. But i'll try. Not so much as "hell's darker chamber" but more mankind's darker chambers, a sad resigned despair at mankind's obsession through the ages with evil and war and the young men that have to go and fight those wars and suffer as a result.Though when i read the lyrics in written form they don't really match with my interpretation but that's the impression i get from the song. That keyboard sound that first kicks in at around 1.54 that they (Bernard?) found for the song is possibly what forms the keypoint of the mood of the song.
