Hi all

I'm doing some detailed research for a project I'm working on and although there's an absolute shedload of info available via Google about every minute detail of where/when Joy Division recorded all their stuff, I'm finding it's a lot more scant for New Order's early stuff. Can anyone tell me where/when the Ceremony (both versions) and Everything's Gone Green singles were recorded with Martin Hannett? I'm assuming Strawberry Studios, Stockport where Movement was recorded but would love to know for definite.

Cheers :)

Think the first version of Ceremony was recorded in New York as was In A Lonely Place. Wasn't it when they were in the U.S for a few gigs in September 1980 ? First tentative gigs as New Order. Can't remember what studio but i'm sure i've read it somewhere. There was a whole article about Ceremony in Mojo or one of those type of magazines a few years ago which probably had the information about which New York studio Ceremony was recorded in. Don't know about Everything's Gone Green.

From my memory:

Ceremony I was recorded in early September 1980 somewhere in New Jersey.
Ceremony II was recorded back at home in December 1980.
"Movement" was recorded on April 24-30, 1981, in Strawberry Studios.
"Everything's Gone Green" was recorded in August 1981.

If you can track it down, http://www.joydiv.org/bk5.htm takes you to '82/'83... Criticised for being inaccurate but given that this was years before the media explosion and New Order were notoriously 'private', it's not bad.
Contrast this book with 'World in Motion'. Times Change (see what I did there?).

If you have one of the revised Collector's Editions of the 5 Factory albums you'd have a small extra booklet that gives up a fair amount of useful Studio info.

Studios used (1980-1983) include:

E.A.R.S. - New Jersey
Western Works - Sheffield
Marcus Music - London
Advision - London
Cargo - Rochdale
Strawberry - Stockport
Britannia Row - London
Revolution - Cheadle

The Power Of Independent Trucking blog from 2009 has some info on the Western Works session:

- homage: New Order - Western Works 9/80
- New Order - Western Works demos followup

The download links are no longer available but the brief history and pictures of the actual reel-to-reel you may find useful.

EARS, a small studio in east Orange is where New Order did their first recording. A nice little history of it here, alas it was paved over by a trucking company....

Thanks for all the replies guys. It seems it's a mystery as to where exactly Procession / Everything's Gone Green + the 2 other tracks were recorded... :)
