Interesting, "all" of Joy Divisions albums to be reissued again, this time it will include Substance.

Yeah I spotted the announcement on social media yesterday and here is the pre-order link they posted: The Stereo Boutique. Unknown Pleasures/Closer are re-released on 29 June 2015 with Still/Substance following on 24 July 2015. I wonder if Still will feature a white ribbon this time around?

The first time they reissued the JD stuff on vinyl was around the time of 'Control' in 2007 so this is the second time from Warners. As has been noted 'Substance' did not feature back then so it's good to see it included now and I will be purchasing that one at least. They've tacked on the previously CD-only 'Appendix' tracks and 'Love Will Tear Us Apart (Pennine Version)' neither of which featured on the original Fac250 vinyl back in 1988 so that's good to see. Basically most of what was covered in the +- box set 5 years ago.

Joy Division - Substance (2015 Reissue)

Will there be another 'limited edition/blank artwork' box-set like the one in 2007 comprising all the reissues? If so they've not announced it yet...

I don't think Still is going to be a 'Hessian' version, more like the usual Factory gatefold (ie. same but without the Hessian outer).

Fair enough, doing a 'Hessian' version would probably cost a mint unless they did a limited run. I believe the 2007 reissue had the ribbon and I keep meaning to buy one but it seems to have become quite rare over the past few years next to its Unknown Pleasures/Closer counterparts. Actually, I do own it as part of the "In Memory" box set but it's got no artwork.

A remarkably convincing looking Japanese bootleg of Substance was doing the rounds last year featuring all the 'appendix' tracks from the CD release. When it first cropped up on Ebay I thought it was legit but turned out to be just a very good er... facsimile.

On 3 July 2015 it will be exactly 35 years, a few months, some days and a bit since the death of Ian Curtis. To celebrate this momentous occasion, Dumb are putting out 'Scrotal: From New Order to The Other Two,' an exciting, essential and unique release because:
1. It's the first album to feature both New Order and The Other Two. Awesome.
2. The letter 'r' occurs in 'New Order', 'The Other Two' and 'Scrotal', so it will be highlighted on the front cover, which also features a leaf.
3. It is the only NO-related release to come out on 3 July 2015.
'We're really thrilled about the project,' insists a spoked person for Stoopid. 'We're thrilled that in the midst of the worst economic crisis since Bros, people will still shell out for shit they've already bought 63716395 times before and could hear for free on Youtube anyway... Essentially, we're on a mission to create the Most Pointless Release Ever. London set the stakes high with 'International', 'The Best Of JD' and everything else they ever did, but we're convinced that with a bit of effort we can outdo even them.'
Suggestions are:
1. 15 K - The Revenge album was shit and 14K didn't even get that far. But we're gonna put out a limited edition CD (38517395274847241957492634265453248998564574358757548646005262949467788990000864367865764768 copies only) featuring a K on the sleeve (like N on the Sirens LP) and this song played 14 times. Clever!
2. Stance Sub: The Substance album played backwards with a picture of a beetroot on the cover.
3. 'Motel: From Revenge to The Other Two.' The only release to feature 'Pineapple Face' AND 'Night Voice', with a parsnip on the cover and liner notes by Paul Morley, 'Hooky, the Hacienda and Hilary.' I don't know who Hilary is.

Pretty sure in 1987 JD's Substance was also put out on vinyl. I'd check, but it was the 1980s, so everything came out on vinyl.

Here's the press release from Rhino:

JOY DIVISION

The Band's Studio Albums And Essential Compilations Are Coming Out On 180-Gram Vinyl This Summer As "Love Will Tear Us Apart" Celebrates 35 Years

A New Version Of Substance Featuring Two Additional Tracks Will Arrive On 24th July

To celebrate the 35th anniversary of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" on June 27th, Rhino is pleased to announce the re-issue of four iconic Joy Division releases on heavyweight 180-gram vinyl. The studio albums UNKNOWN PLEASURES (1979) and CLOSER (1980) will be available on June 29th at retail outlets. They will be followed on July 24th by STILL (1981) and an expanded version of SUBSTANCE (1988), both available as a double-LP set.

Each design replicates the original in painstaking detail, including the gatefold covers used for Still and Substance. The music heard on the albums was remastered in 2007 when Rhino introduced expanded versions of the albums. The lone exception is Substance, which features audio remastered in 2010 for the +- singles box and for the first time on vinyl, the expanded tracklist from the original CD release, plus two additional songs: "As You Said" and the Pennine version of "Love Will Tear Us Apart." In addition to the vinyl format, Rhino will also release this expanded version of Substance as a 19-track CD, available on July 24th.

Joy Division recorded two albums before singer Ian Curtis tragically took his own life in 1980. But what the Manchester quartet lacked in longevity, it more than made up for in quality. The band's only two studio albums were groundbreaking and helped shape the sound and mood of the alternative music that followed in the band's wake.

Ian Curtis (guitar/vocals), Bernard Sumner (keyboard), Peter Hook (bass), and Stephen Morris (drums) released their debut, Unknown Pleasures, in 1979. By the end of the year, the album's atmospheric sound had won over fans and critics with tracks like "She's Lost Control" and "Day of the Lords." Closer , the group's second album, arrived the following year and its dark and melancholy tones continued to earn rave reviews for songs like "Isolation" and "Heart and Soul."

The compilations Still and Substance fill in the missing pieces of the band's history with non-album singles ("Transmission" and "Love Will Tear Us Apart"), unreleased studio tracks ("Something Must Break" and "Ice Age"), and choice live recordings ("Disorder" and the only performance of "Ceremony.")

They've added "As You Said" and the January 1980 recording of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" from the b-side of the single to Substance.

I'd much prefer a CD pressing of Still with "24 Hours" reinstated.

I agree but it's unlikely because as it stands the CD version of Still clocks in at almost 79 minutes. If they were going to reinstate "24 Hours" they'd have to either lose one of the other tracks or spread the compilation across 2 CDs. There is a Japanese 2xCD edition of Still from the late 80s which did this but omitted 24H regardless.

Honestly guys, I've been a fan (on and off) for years now, and I love sharing info. I also know my sarcastic sense of humour isn't everyone's proverbial cup of tea. But really, who's getting anything outa this apart from Rhino's accountants? I confidently expect to read:
'2016 is 36 years since Ian's death, so Rhino are rereleasing all the JD albums but with an extra Spice Girls track to show Ian's state of mind. 'UP' plus 'Wannabe', cos before he was a legend, Ian was a 'wannabe' legend... 'Closer' plus 'Who Do You Think You Are'?, cos Ian had personality problems... 'Still' plus 'Mama', cos many artists have a fraught relationship with their parents... 'Substance' plus 'Spice Up Your Life', cos that's what Ian needed to do to his own life... 2008's 'Best of JD' CD with Victoria Beckham's 2001 'Victoria Beckham' CD, cos that's shit too.
It's weird.

Why is it that Still is more expensive than Substance? They're both 2 x LP formats. Does this not surely signify that the packaging of the album will be somewhat superior to warrant the extra cash or am I missing something? I note that Vinyl Collector posted images yesterday of the packaging for Unknown Pleasures, Closer and Substance, but mysteriously Still was not shown.

I'm not sure how to upload a photo on here or how to link a photo from Facebook either.

Any conspiracy theories?

It's likely to be more expensive because they're probably going to sell less of them. That will be priced in.

Also, even the leaner version of Still has some expensive to replicate features in the packaging, all of it is non-standard.

So tell me what I want, it ain’t worth just half a wank,
You wanna, you wanna, I wanna, I wanna, you wanna really
Really really wanna ‘Atmosphere’.

If you want the future, live in the past,
If you wanna get new songs, shove it up your ass,
So just keep wasting your precious time,
Put old shit together, piss away your dimes.

I’ll tell you what you want, though it isn’t worth a wank,
So tell me what I want, it ain’t really worth a wank,
You wanna, you wanna, I wanna, I wanna, you wanna really
Really wanna ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’.

If you wanna be fucked over, you gotta buy ‘Temptation’ (or ‘Lost Sirens’),
Reissues forever, bonus on the end,
If you wanna buy another, you have got to give,
Give us bucks for ‘Closer’, ‘cos that’s the way we swizz.

Don’t be thick, you’re a twat.

Blue Monday, ‘How It Feels…’
Blue Monday 88 too, is this shit real? (It can’t be real?
Blue Monday again, for ’95.
True Faith’s really buggered, fresh for ’95.

Yo, I’ll tell you what you want, though it isn’t worth a wank,
So tell me what I want, it ain’t really worth a wank,
You wanna, you wanna, I wanna, I wanna, you wanna really
Really really wanna remix ‘Liar’.

If you wanna be fucked over, you gotta buy ‘New Dawn Fades’ (or ‘Love Less’ or ‘Mesh’),
This shit lasts forever, fuck ‘Where Will It End?’
If you wanna be a fucker, you have got ‘Sunrise’,
‘Morning Night And Day’ and ‘All The Way’, ‘The Him’.

‘New Order Story’ on DVD, then ‘Movement’ on CD,
Then ‘Get Ready’ on MP3,
We got ‘Hurt’ in the place and ‘Technique’ in your face,
We got ‘Novelty’, three versions, no freebie,
‘Lost Sirens’ didn’t come for free, it was real late, Jeez ,
And ‘Colony’, or ‘Jetstream’,
Slam your money down and waste another pound,
Slam your wonga down, and piss away your pounds.

If you wanna be fucked over, you gotta purchase ‘Revenge’ (the artwork’s minge),
Even Electronic, Bad Lieutenant gents,
If you wanna buy some drivel, ‘Super Highways’ jizz,
Other Two together with some useless pish.

Yer fucker, yer fucker – yo, yo, yo, yo…
Slam your money down and waste another pound,
Slam your wonga down, and piss away your pounds.
Huh? Huh? Huh? Huh?
Slam your lolly down, you’re losing all yer pounds…
Slam yer hard-earned cash down, silly wanker.

There was a mix up on Amazon between Substance and Still with the artwork. They've rectified it now, but Substance is currently £27.99 (even though you can purchase it from Rhino for £15.99), but Still is now £20.99. Great price for anyone who wants to buy this before they realise.....

Just had an email from Amazon stating that the release of Substance has been put back a week from 24th to 31st. Still is scheduled for release on 24th still. I can't see any other evidence of this change on the internet so not sure if it's just Amazon who have a supplier delay or the issue is a general one.

They're both delayed a week due to 'stock issues'.
