So i've got dem STEMS.... wot software do you need to play about with them?? STEMS players seem a bit limited, do u need to shell out 44 notes for this Native Instruments Traktor app? Bit hefty for me, i like the idea of fading in/out the 4 layers within the tracks to come up with something, although as stated previously it would be pretty limited to mute drums here, just vocals + geetar here... bit of fun but not really accessible to the novice if you need to pay for a professional DJ type SW.
We got this 10 years ago didn't we, with J-E-T - 4 track stems on the CD with the sw to fade in and out??? It was the future they said... and its arrived. Life is so carazee these days.

Downloaded the STEMS and converted to WAV using Music Converter (free) for Mac. File size for the one track (Academic) is 98MB after conversion. Sounds every bit as good as the Music Complete WAV digital download, at least through the headphones - though that won't be enough for professional mixers. Juno, Music Converter, iTunes, desktop, upload to cloud, mobile, download off cloud, playlist - new walk to work track thank you very much. Sure beats waiting all night to hit record on a Casio cassette player placed next to my mono radio back in 1985 and hoping that Janice Long might play something off the upcoming Low Life album. Holy shit, multi-track audio for Academic and Tutti? That's insane.
I noticed these tracks being avaiable but I assumed they were the regular MP3/WAV/FLACs that we already have from the box set.
This is exciting news for multi-tracks in general too as it obviously makes distribution easier than separate files for each layer.

there's a discussion about the stems here: http://forums.neworderon...ts&m=21846#post21846NO, IT IS NOT ANY EASIER LIKE THIS. it's easier to have the split tracks in the first place. THIS IS A HORRIBLE FORMAT. basically they're too limited to do any real mixes with. just your basic instrumental, or minimal tracks from. not really that exciting, but fun to play with. i've already put up mixes of academic, and tutti frutti in the 'other singles' thread. later -1

It looks like the files are only on Juno, I can't use Juno in Australia. Could someone please share with me the 2 files? It's rare enough for artists to release multi-tracks and my impression is this format may help convince them. It's sad to hear the format is lackluster. But I still think this is cool. I wonder if other tracks will get the same treatment.

To really get the most out of these you'd have to be pretty savvy with whichever music creation tool you use to begin with and even after you've extracted the STEMS you'll probably have to chop them up depending on what type of mix you want to make. Basically, it will take a bit of effort. Most regular fans will download these once, maybe make an instrumental mix as I have and then never use them again. A novelty, as it were. Still I'm not complaining, good to have etc.

Can't get on with Audacity.I bought the Tutti Extended 2 STEMS , converted to WAV, imported to Audacity (i installed the ffmpeg thing) but as before when i've tried Audacity a message comes up "Error opening sound device.Please check playback device settings and the project sample rate" Can't get anything to play.Oh and when i first try to launch Audacity the message comes up "Could not find any audio devices.You will not be able to play or record audio. Yep i remember them days.In the end John Peel got first dibs on playing Low Life tracks before its release.I got lucky and was tuned into his show one night with cassette ready to record and he played Love Vig, Perfect Kiss, This Time Of Night and Sunrise one after the other, he basically played the first side of the album in one go then i think later on he played Sub Culture and possibly Sooner Than You Think.If i remember right it was the first time even he had heard the songs- he'd been handed the album just before he went on air that night.This was on his 10pm til midnight show on bank holiday Monday 6th May 1985 , one week before the album came out.Wish i still had the cassette of that show, it got lost eventually.The following night he played Elegia and Face Up.

I have just bought TF and tried opening it in Audacity (mac) and it presented me with a single stream. So I poked at the file using the ffmpeg command-line tool. There are 5 audio streams in the file, all of which are AAC encoded (so lossy encoded) at various bitrates hovering around the 256kbps mark. The tracks are: 0. whole extended mix 1. drums 2. bass line 3. lead synths, piano, the synth washes, the acoustic guitar, the orchestral strings 4. vocals: all of them, including the italian To extract the tracks without transcoding them, try Quote:ffmpeg -i 'New_Order_-_Tutti_Frutti_(Extended_Mix).stem.mp4' -map 0:a:$i -map_metadata 0:g -acodec copy $i.m4a
Where $i is the track you're after. With regards negative-1's point: obviously the channels here have been mixed down from many more channels, but I don't know of any artist who has truly given away the raw multitracks for their stuff. The Nine Inch Nails multitracks are a bit more spread out (5-8 tracks per song) which is handy. I think for Tutti Frutti it's a shame we couldn't get isolated vocal channels. But there's still a lot to work with here!

Yeah no worries.Audacity i think basically can't detect my audio playing device.But feck it, i spent a bit of time trying to figure out how to fix it but gave up and haven't got time or the desire to mess around trying to sort it.Would have been interesting to have a play about and do some personal mixes of Tutti Frutti but i'm not going to piss about trying to work out Audacity.The U-Mix or whatever it was called remixing software on the Jetstream CD back in 2005 was a lot more easy for a novice like me.

Had never heard of this Juno site - been having a mooch and finally got a copy of Elegia (17 minute version). Couldn't get it off iTunes because of my British address showing on bank cards and Apple's stupid rules about non USA customers not being able to use iTunes USA.

Bought these and managed to export instrumental versions using Audacity - not too difficult.
Would love to have had the album version of Academic in instrumental format though.
Hopefully those instrumentals versions become available somewhere soon.

While I am happy that they have released this, better than nothing, I would love proper individual stems.
I also can't understand releasing academic really, it's not the one that jumps out at me to remix, or maybe that's the point.
Still going to have a stab at it.

I've just noticed that the vox track has the twangy guitar bits and the sweeping stutter-synth bits mixed into it, which is a shame (I had plans for those bits :)) Apropos nothing, picked up the 12" today
