For anyone still interested in such things. In the charts released yesterday Tutti Frutti was:

Vinyl Chart: Number 2
Physical Chart: Number 4
Singles Chart: (not in top 100)

Not even touching the top 100 UK singles chart? I find that unbelievable. It's a great tune and a good choice for a single. Mind you a few weeks back there were about 17 Justin Bieber entries in the UK chart making it pretty irrelevant these days.

For an old timer like me downloading singles is a bit crap anyway to be honest, I would always prefer to actually own it rather than have a 256 Kbps file any day.

I guess it also doesn't help that Mute released some of the mixes digitally before the physical release. As Bernard says in his book, he has never cared about chart positions anyway.

he might not have cared.

but historically, all through the 80s, they hit 1 with almost all their singles on the indie charts.

also, world in motion hit 1, was a major event for the group.

so i don't believe him, when he says he didn't care.

he might not care now, or since 2000.... but that's different.. no one really cares since then.

Crikey, so a record can be close to number 1 in the vinyl or “physical” (CD?) chart but nowhere in the top 100 overall? doesn’t say much for vinyl or cd sales, if the overall top 100 is a combination of all 3. Surprising that downloads should dominate sales to that extent. if so, anything not available for download appears to be somewhat at a disadvantage. I just had a look at the chart and there are some real old chestnuts in there from decades past, possibly impulse downloads? Have to admit I just downloaded that old Wham xmas song (Last Christmas you gave me your heart) - it finally got to me. Another song in that vein is A1, Caught in the middle, I can now play them back to back and wallow in nostalgia.

If Radio 1, Kiss FM etc don't play it then won't get downloaded very much I suppose. The same thing happened to the Petshop Boys on their last release. The last album was their biggest in years, but the singles from it never reached the top 100. You only need to look at the top 40 chart to realise what dreadful music those stations play!

U2's 2009 single Get On Yer Boots didn't make the UK singles Top ten.

It really shouldn't have been a surprise to see the blatant PR stunt they pulled by (pretending) to offer an album of new material for free. I say "pretending" - look at how it gave iTunes the form of publicity money can't buy...

For the record, Depeche Mode's first single from their 2013 album barely made the Top 75 singles.

So Mute should be given credit for pushing Music Complete's vinyl singles so high in the vinyl charts, if the above is correct.

With singles , sometimes extra songs just happen, and neworder extras like sabotage , brutal, player in the league, behind closed doors, and here to stay are all top notch. Maybe the next single has a treasure or two.

I think it's a tough time to release a new brand new song/single and expect it to do well especially as it's basically the Xmas market which is over-saturated with seasonal dross. At the end of the day it's album sales that count and Music Complete seems to have blown expectations out of the water on that count; number 2 on the UK chart is pretty respectable whichever way you cut it.

Regardless of this song's chart position, it still sounds amazing with every listen. The original album version is probably the best and it easily makes it into New Order's top ten all-time list of great tunes.

Awesome track and my favourite on MC along with Academic, but not in the same league as anything on Substance.

he has a point

although tutti frutti is a good song for them now

would any of us be as obsessed with the band if this had been released as a single in the 80's?

i think not

it isn't a patch on any of their singles from the 80's,including subculture

and the blt remix is far worse than that for me,the brotherhood version is untouchable

I hate all sheets, duvets and quilts. Sorry, that's a blanket statement.
Fuck, someone on these forums agrees with me! Better lower my standards a tad.
Wags were reportedly spotted at gigs circa 85 / 86 with 'Robie must die' T-shirts, and as I mentioned the blank sleeve was perhaps a way of saying the mix was shit. I actually loved Dub Vulture - dated now of course, but as a teen I liked the way it went all weird and wonky at the end. But I was a weird and wonky teen. I'm OK now though. The voices told me.
As Bernard said on their second DVD, it's diffiult to assess recent stuff as it's yet to stand the test of time. Love the new LP, but will Tutti Frutti sound like a novelty record in 20 years? Ceremony still kicks butt and even the massively overplayed Blue Monday continues to gain admirers. I'm not criticising the new abum, just ruminating.

Indeed. That weird ending on Dub Vulture was great, loved it especially that squawking bird noise- what a soothing and relaxing sound that always was.I think Saville didn't bother with a sleeve for Sub Culture not because he thought the remix was shit, it was because he knew it was a thankless task putting any effort in when the song would be competing in the November 85 singles chart with Colonel Abrams' masterpiece 'Trapped'.What heady times that guaranteed floorfiller provided whenever it came on down at the local nightspot.Sub Culture didn't stand a chance.

You're forgetting this masterpiece: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1b8AhIsSYQ.
A summary of what was wrong with the 80s: http://www.allinlondon.c.../posts.php?thread=12185.
I can't vouch for the sleeve styory - the only '''''''''''authority'''''''''' I got it on was the Paradise fanzine.
