Please help me! Has the original '93 first pressing of Repuclic got the silver inlay with transparent CD tray like the 2003 reissue? Or the first edition got black CD tray?

Thanks!

When you say inlay do you mean under the CD tray? My original 93 CD has got silver inlay under the CD tray. The CD tray is black.

Yes, I mean under the CD tray. So the original has silver too. Thank you very much for the info.

I saw on eBay a lot of silver inlayed versions with that old transparent CD tray that had bars on it. So some editions originally had transparent tray?

I've only ever had the orange spongy digipaks and the Japanese issue, which has the standard dark grey/graphite tray. The paper underneath the tray (opposite the back cover) is unprinted white.

As far as the orange paks, I had one each of the blue lettering and the grey. I'd seen more of the blue so traded it in. Later, I read that it was more rare than the grey! I do remember each disc was silkscreened differently than the standard U.S. release with a different number. But closer inspection of the bottom disc revealed the same manufacturing number, so the silkscreening was done after the fact. Ultimately, I ended up only keeping the Japanese release as it sounded better and included the Regret Sabres mixes. The Japanese release of Substance is also audibly better than other issues.

I also have a US pressing of Republic but it has black tray and white inlay under the CD tray. So it seems the silver inlay is a UK/EU only thing.

First UK CD issue:

Back of inlay - silver
Tray - opal transparent with stripes on the left side (very hard to get new these days)
CD - white ink, made in UK by PDO matrix

Most likely affected by CD rot by now.

My cd tray is black but i'm wondering now if it's not the original tray, maybe the original tray got broken years ago and i replaced it with a black one. It's quite possible but buggered if i can remember now.And yeah the actual cd is pretty rotted, unplayable now i think- if i ever listen to Republic it's from the file on my laptop.

All the Republic era UK CDs are affected more or less. The worst is my The Other Two and You CD with the extra inlay, with big bronze rings. I sold all those CD singles while still intact a few years ago, just kept the vinyl 12"es. Who listens to those 20 year old remixes anyway?

My 1993 Centredate Republic CD has a transparent CD tray with silver/grey underneath. The back outside surface of the case shows white lettering on black thru the plastic. Not sure how that works but I’m not taking it apart to find out. CD still plays fine in the old ghetto blaster! (and presumably the laptop, but of course I listen to the ripped tracks on there).

Thanks! :)

My US pressing is also can't playable now but the CD looks pristine, so it's strange.

And thanks for the rot info, so I won't buy an original 93 UK pressing. Luckily my Regret CD still payable.

Republic seems to be NO's marmite album. You either love it (or at least like some of it) or you hate it. Three of the four singles were quite good with "Ruined in a day" being saved by the K-Klass remix. Hooky's bass features nicely in plenty of the songs with a nice subtle sound. Does Gillian even sing on one or two songs here too?

I really like the album from "Everyone everywhere" onwards. It is very consistent with the slightly harsh industrial sound present in each track. Young Offender, Liar and Chemical are all good tunes. Hooky's bass solo on "Times Change" is sublime. "Special" is just that, a really good New Order track and is one of the best songs on the album.

"Everyone everywhere" is one of my all-time favourite New Order songs. Gillian plays the guitar solo on this as far as I can tell while Bernard's guitar is a melancholic version of Niles Rodgers. The lyrics are quite vague on a lot of the album and it's the same on this track but then there is the line "And when we kiss, we speak as one, with a single breath, this world is gone". A beautiful lyric. The section of this song where Gillian and Bernard both play the same piece together on guitar at the Montreux Jazz Festival is phenomenal. Not sure I have seen another band ever do the same thing!

Unfortunately, my 1993 Republic CD is dying with CD rot so it looks like I'll have to invest in a fresh pressing. Does anyone know if this album been re-mastered on CD or is it due to be soon?

Or something inbetween. I just find it incredibly dull.
