Anyone know why Saville (or somebody) changed the original cover art to the one that used for the remastered edition (that shiny-like cover)?
All the other remastered albums has the original cover art, but Brotherhood changed. Why?
Thanks!

Thanks! I"ve been wondering that myself. Only a guess, but I wondered if he (or the band) were not satisfied with the quality of the original photograph. They're both photos of the same thing, I think, so perhaps the original shot came out blander than they or he wanted, and the reissues gave him or them an opportunity to retake.

Unhelpful "Dunno" comment from me too. But I must say Brotherhood was never my favourite album cover. I thought BLT and SOTN were nicer to look at in terms of those metallic experiments. I don't normally like it when people mess with the original artwork (just look at Phil Collins!) but this is a rare example of the newer artwork being better than the original, IMO. Speaking of alternative artwork, I'm about to post something in NO spotting...

Yeah the original cover art for Brotherhood was pretty cool but at the same time it soon became ...well let's just say it didn't have the staying power of the classic covers for PC&L, Low Life or Technique.

I like the original cover much more. It has that raw, metal feel, but the remasterd edition looks like some digital image. I don't know if it's digitally manipulated, or was the metal plate really so shiny?

I can't find it anywhere, but recall there being an interview on the Internet with either Peter Saville or Howard Wakefield around the time the "Collector's Editions" were released. In this interview, one of them stated that the added glare was something that Peter had tried to achieve with the original design, but was unable to at the time.
I personally think it's ugly. Further, I've had private communications with someone that worked at Peter Saville Associates and helped design the sleeves for Brotherhood, State of the Nation and Bizarre Love Triangle. Said person likewise thinks that the updated version is hideous. Further, they had no recollection Peter of trying to get the "glare" on the original editions.

All of the 2008 Collector's Editions artwork (later reused for the 2015 digital only remasters) had cleaned up and slightly different looking sleeves next to the original LPs. As discussed Brotherhood was the most drastically altered but if you look at the others in particular PC&L and Technique, the colour schemes are different next to the originals and look "sharper". At the time my assumption was, well they've remastered the audio so they've decided to remaster the artwork too. It's a matter of opinion whether this was a good thing, I share the opinion Brotherhood may not have "worked". Most of the images above taken from fanart.tv, a cracking resource for album artwork. Can't say I'm a fan of the remastered Brotherhood artwork either. Something about it looks off, like it was Photoshopped with one of those zany preset filters to make it look liquid. But hey, at least it's better than the 2009 Low-Life LP...

As you've posted they monumentally screwed up the vinyl artwork on the Low-life reissue for some reason; the gap between the R and the D makes it look like a crap bootleg.
Further proof if any were required that Rhino did bugger all quality checks during those years. They didn't seem to care.

Though I no longer have it, my first CD copy of Brotherhood was a Factory issue with a more convincingly metallic/shiny finish. The car carry case inside, however, was the more standard grey image.

Yeah the initial run of Brotherhood FACD150 came with metallic/shiny finish artwork. Those after were simply a regular CD booklet/card.
I don't actually have one of the metallic ones (I've got a later FACD150) I keep waiting for one in mint condition to come up before I hand over the cash.

I have the later re-released London Records edition of Brotherhood, but it's also have a very little metallic finish.

Yeah, all the pre-remastered London editions had the same artwork as the original Factory CD editions. The mastering is the same as well. The only odd version I've seen was a yellow and purple colored version of Movement, but it was years ago and I can't remember which company was distributing it.

I remember that some early vinyl editions also came with a kind of "real" metallic effect on the sleeve... According Discogs, special editions were coated with titanium zinc indeed and that's how they produced that effect. Probably, it have cost a lot of money. My opinion is: maybe the reason why they re-created the artwork for the remasters is to reproduce or to simulate that visual effect in a cheaper way. |

I think you are most likely right. I've never seen one of the original metallic covers (FACT 150 SP?) but the closest I've seen to what I imagine is the cassette release http://www.worldinmotion...BrotherhoodTapeLDUKa.jpg

It's giving off a faint shimmer in the top row next to the original Factory rice paper CD cover of Low-Life (since traded in for someone else to enjoy as well).

Always much preferred the original artwork. I liked the way the font was the same size on the vinyl, CD and cassette, each was just a detail of the bigger picture
