Nice to see them return to the Greek. Saw them here in 1987 (on the penultimate date of their U.S. tour). Echo & the Bunnymen headlined, New Order played before them and (unfortunately) Gene Loves Jezebel opened. The following night NO headlined while EatB played second.

It's my understanding that Johnny Marr, not long out of The Smiths, flew out to California to meet Barney at these dates. It's there that they hatched the idea of forming Electronic.

Another great venue Andy. The Amphitheater/colosseum style venue feels very European. Yes I was there to see the SUBSTANCE 1987 show as well.
Five years later, I started graduate school there at UC Berkeley. Our graduation "Ceremony" / "Procession" was actually at the Greek Theater. So looking forward to go back, for many different reasons. Hope to see you there!

Wow, another reason to drive 22 hours r/t. Just got back from visiting the car museums in la and oxnard, but going back to greek and Santa Barbara is so excellent. Some underage teens now in their mid 40's may buy me beers this time. The Bunnies featured Peter de Freitas, drummer extraordinaire ala Steven Morris.
Coachella was so bad, Glastonbury in mud is better .neworder played between 2 stages, the sound was inferior to a normal show , new order should have mooned the bands 40 meters to the left and right . Gene vs jezebel was guns and roses in drag

You read my mind.

Seeing New Order and the Bunnymen (with their classic lineup, as you referenced in your inimitable way) in Berkeley in '87 is a wonderful memory that will stay with me. Unfortunately, it also brings to mind seeing them in Irvine less than 2 years later and Barney dedicating the set to Pete who had just died.

The '89 gig I referred to was New Order (with Sugarcubes and P.I.L.), not Echo & the Bunnymen. The Elegia post wasn't from me.

The '87 Irvine show was where New Order played Substance in order. It's my understanding that many fans had left the venue by the time New Order returned for an encore of Atmosphere, Love Will Tear Us Apart and Sister Ray (I was not at this show). Joy Division covers by the band were still quite rare at this point so I do regret not doing this gig also.

Was at the '87 show also, the 2nd show. EATB came out and they joined NO for Anarchy in the UK as the encore.

'89 at The Shoreline...great show with PIL.

I missed the 2014 show at BG Civic so I'm stoked to be going this time!

New Order played zero Technique songs,
although Love Vigilantes and Regret are similar in style ( i had long ago made a rearranged technique tape ,with LV and R added ).
I maintain that if New Order reach into their past to add LV and R , then why , in all that is sane and wonderful, can't they just try to rehearse a song or 4 from Technique, and be happy about it, and play it or them live.
The vast bulk of fans have a connection to Technique that surpasses Substance, LL, PCL, and JD , maybe combined.
So , band we love , just get over it., learn to like those great great great , super great songs again and tour with them , please.
And rev up Restless to about mach 5. It is a great song ,but could use a whomping stonking guitar solo freakout, and Barney can itch and scratch and boogie dance. Pick up the restless pace a bit Bernard, you don't have to give it the Perry Como (old slow singer)treatment.
And, why can't they take a break for 20 minutes, return for 10 more songs, just once in a career. In Berkeley where , no curfew is ever needed,Berkeley, this is the singularity of everyone everywhere grooving all night long , and again New Order finished before 10:30 . We are not babies . It is imperative , it is beyond imperative that an outdoor show be planned that is in two parts , in one evening, with 40 songs , ten chosen by NOOL, and filmed and released, and new order liking it , and no more of these Nancy boy concerts, come on new order, we are adults, or used to be. So how about in Manchester this summer.

Some suggestions for every future show
Start with das Rheingold, and segue, with no gap,as there was a few second gap before singularity , to Atmosphere.

All Night Long, True Faith,
Fine Time, Love Less, Run, Dream Atteack, Round and Round , Regret,, Ruined In A Day, Everyone Everywhere , Special.

With these extras
EEG, Procession, Denial, Cries and Whispers, Leave Me Alone, 1963, Someone like you, , Every Little Counts, Close Range ,,Primitive Notion-39 songs

Overall really good show. I prefer the set list from the 2014 Bill Graham Civic though.

Opening band was way too mellow for opening I think.

Agree, some Technique songs would be pretty cool. I was hoping for Ceremony, but, just means I need to go next time.

Anyone going to Hooks show 4/28 at UC Theater? JD and NO Substance albums. Nice!

They played the Bill Graham Civic in 2014 playing 11 of the same tracks as this night. The Civic show included a one-off cover of San Francisco by Scott McKenzie and the (somewhat) surprising Californian Grass which went a ways toward that show seeming fresher. In addition, Music Complete wasn't out at the time of the Civic show but they were previewing it during that jaunt with Singularity and Plastic.

It stands to reason that more tracks from it would be featured for the Berkeley show as they haven't been up here since the LP's release. What's disappointing is that they haven't brought back any interesting older tracks. I had hoped with the upcoming Manchester events that there would be some surprises for these US gigs. No such luck.
