playing oldies now?

whos joe? really?

what in the heck?

and yes, i know it's not a typical gig. but the first half of those choices
is particularly weak.

the second half is pretty typical.

wonder if they'll just repeat these for the rest of the show.

I know I've said it already, but fuck me, there really is no pleasing some people is there...

What fucking planet are you on ?

If you think that is particularly weak, you'll only be happy if they play Movement in full twice in a row and you get a snog off Hooky midset. Fuck the fuck off with your nitpicking, pissing-on-chips bollocks.

I hope they record the set for release. That's a brilliant set list and surely more deserving of a release than the last 3 live albums that have had 2/3 of the tracks repeated across all 3 CDs (Troxy, Bestival and NOMC15)

I don't really care what songs they play, I just wish they would mix up the setlist like this every night

ok, lets take a look at the setlist

good choices

3 - ultraviolence, shellshock, subculture

1 - guilt is a useless emotion - ok
=============================

indifferent

4 - common songs they've played [elegia, bizarre love triangle,
plastic, your silent face]

replaceable songs

2 - joy division songs, should have been replaced with new order songs

very questionable

whos joe - subpar slow song from 'waiting for the sirens call'
dream attack, vanishing point - subpar songs from 'technique'
but then again, the whole album is that way.
behind closed doors - a b-side from 'get ready', easily replaced with an
album track or a better b-side
all day long - subpar slow song from 'brotherhood'

not represented
=================================================
nothing from 'movement'
nothing from 'republic'
nothing from most of their EP's
nothing from 'lost sirens'

so yeah, there could have been a lot of other choices,
concerning b-sides and album tracks. as mentioned
the 2nd set of tracks, 8 of them, are pretty typical.

these just don't seem like the best choices
especially when 2/15 are from joy division.

Taste is subjective.

I believe many fans rate Vanishing Point, Dream Attack and All Day Long as among their best tracks

The only quibbles I have with the set would be agreeing with you about Who's Joe, and them opting to lean towards the 12" version of Sub-Culture rather than the LP.

The only other critique I have is that they don't really need a "synth orchestra" to realize those tracks live, it's just a bit of theatre. But if that's what was required for them to get off their asses and spice up the sets, then so be it.

Let's take a look at the setlist indeed.

And some facts.

They've played nothing from "Movement" since 1987.
They've played songs from "Lost Sirens" a total of 11 times in all.

Yeah there could've been a lot of choices. They could have played the usual set made of songs that have been played at every gig since 1982 with "Blue Monday", "Temptation", "Toothache", and all that. THAT would be 'typical' and 'weak'.

Setlist (with last play dates before this week)

Elegia (2016)
Who's Joe (2006)
Dream Attack (1993)
Disorder (1980)
Ultraviolence (1984)
Behind Closed Doors (NEVER)
All Day Long (1989)
Shellshock (1987)
Guilt (2006)
Subculture (1989)
BLT (2017)
Vanishing Point (1989)
Plastic (2017)
Your Silent Face (2017)
Decades (not played between 1984 and 2016)

Whether you think they are the best choices is irrelevant. Fact is two thirds of the set was songs that the band haven't played for at least 10 years. In NO way is this typical or weak, and if you think so, you are divorced from reality. If you think Vanishing Point is "subpar" your ears are broken, and clearly you don't actually *like* New Order. Thank God you don't write their setlists, we'll get "Doubts Even Here", "Californian Grass", "Young Offender","MTO", and "When I'm With You". You don't understand this band, or the music they make, or what they are good at.

Your opinions are bullshit, and meaningless. Take a hobby that doesn't involve rabbiting absolute shite on this forum like trainspotting or someting.

i know i had a little whinge at a few of the songs they played but to moan at all day long, dream attack and vanishing point is taking it a bit far

all 3 of them are superb choices in my opinion and all day long was nailed on due to the wagner strings they've been using to come onstage to on the MC tour

i do agree on dropping joy division though and all the interviews leading up to the gigs talked about listening to the entire new order back catologue and i actually thought at long last we wouldn't get any

Went on Thursday. Whilst I know that you are all talking about the songs played, you have to hear them so to speak. Most of the songs are remixed and played with...some really work well and others are just different to what you expect!
It's a seriously good and interesting gig with some truly exceptional points...when there is a song you don't know or aren't enjoying, the show is awesome...lights and performers!

From my perspective the truly great songs on the set list are
Plastic
Silent face
Disorder
Vanishing point

Yep.

I had an idea in my head that the whole band would be stood behind synths like Kraftwerk or something, doing completely synthy reworks of the tracks. There's footage on twitter of one of the synth players dancing like an aerobics instructor. Perhaps she was dancing 'cause she didn't have much else to do (?).

Oh there's footage on youtube. Why has no one posted this here yet?? I actually like the 12" (well, the Substance edit) of Subculture. Crazy huh?
(the uploader's phone seems a bit glitchy, which is a shame)

and there's more:

All Day Long. The "Wagner break" at 3.33 should sound BIG for me, but it sounds kinda small.

^At around 4.51 you can hear Vanishing Point's melody being segued in, followed by the "proper" intro for VP. Below is a clip of the intro with the dancing synth girl, thanks to a (former?) forumite:

that last video was one of the highlights of the night for me...when BLT morphed into vanishing point

i was stood at the barrier directly in front of the dancing synth girl...it was good seeing her getting so into the music when she wasn't playing

i was too close to the stage to really see the stage/light show though so i'm going to stand further back next time as it looks amazing on some of the photo's and video's doing the rounds

It looked as though each of the synth players in their cube had a seat.So they could take a breather when they don't have a part to play for a little while? Smile

I did have a watch of a few bits of the YouTube clips .It all looked great but to be brutally honest i struggle to enjoy Bernard's live vocals from a phone recorded clip nowadays.I mean, if or when i'm at a New Order gig his vocals aren't a problem for me as i'm enjoying being at and loving the gig but i just struggle more these days than i did at one time long ago to enjoy his live vocals on bootlegs and such.Maybe i'm going soft in my old age or maybe there's a lot more singers around these days who can really sing well live. For example , i watched The XX's set from Glastonbury on tv last week and Romy's live vocals are simply heaven to listen to.

Anyway, apart from that, i thought the actual music from what i heard in the YouTube clips of Thursday night's gig sounded amazing; Subculture (it leant towards the 12" remix i know, but) and Shellshock in particular.Maybe the synth orchestra in the cubes was, as Andy said, a little theatric but it makes a great show i think, from what i can see of the clips and pics. And i'd certainly love to see that girl in one of the cubes do all that dancing.

What do i think of the setlist? I think it's 75 per cent maginificent in the fact they played so many songs they hadn't done for years or ever but small quibble to the fact they still did a few regulars like BLT and YSF and even Decades is becoming a regular now.I'd like to see the Joy Division songs dropped completely and maybe BLT dropped (though even that sounded a little reworked form what i saw on YouTube so maybe i shouldn't grumble).

Will be very interested to see how the setlits pans out for the remaining 4 gigs of this. Will they change it every show? I hope so.

There was a feature on Radcliffe & Maconie's show on BBC 6Music yesterday (Friday 30th June) about the gig and people who had been inside were asked for their thoughts and opinion on it as they exited - go to around 56 minutes in here

Also, at 20.00 tonight BBC2 has a half hour programme about the Manchester International Festival and the programme info promises "unique access to rehearsals by New Order".
