I became interested in searching for more music with Hooky-like basslines and I already knew about The Cure, but I googled it out of curiosity and found this 2000 interview with questions from fans: http://imaginaryboys.alt...re/articles/youasked.htmHere's the exact quote: Quote:

Not as many as they owe to me. I think Blue Monday came out a bit earlier than The Walk but I wanted it to sound like the band Japan, not New Order. Simon Gallup and Peter Hook have got similarly aggressive personae on stage, although I think Simon is a far superior bass player. And the six-string bass was an instrument we both picked up at the same time in the early '80s. But I've never deliberately copied New Order.

I ain't muso enuff to comment, but I remember Hooky slagging off Simon, but he slags off everyone. In 93 he was asked about imitators (Enjoy the silence, Inbetween days etc) and he said he didn't really care, journos were more interested than he was. He also said the bassline from From Safety To Where was ripped off from a Cure song, but 'You take a bit, you give a bit back.'
I have never worn a dress either. Promise.

I remember reading that interview in Q magazine at the time. Of course Smith's gonna say his own bassist is better than a rival band's. Otherwise, the answer is diplomatic enough. I like bits of what The Cure have done; "Wish" from 1992 is a top album with some good pop songs. "Disintegration" from earlier in the '80s is good too. Not really kept up with them beyond the 90s. I understand they play mammoth 3 hour sets covering old stuff these days, ironically something NO fans would kill for (... well, maybe not 3 hours!) Tim put it well on here a few years ago... The Cure ripped off "Blue Monday" in the early 80s so NO retaliated by ripping off "Just Like Heaven" for "All The Way" on Technique or something like that. Barney had a good anecdote about meeting Robert Smith in the mid-80s and he bought Smith a drink (or vice versa). Edited by user 04 August 2012 18:04:42(UTC)

About the Milan gig last month, Gillian on Twitter said they had a fantastic gig but said the night belonged to the Cure and thanked "Roberto" for the wine. I must confess that I have seen 5 of those 3 hour gigs. Fat Bob and Company can reach down deep inside the vault for songs. And it does not matter how many people are in The Cure or who quit. They tour North America more frequently and play more than 5 dates per tour when they come through.

If one said to me that their last successful single was a Hooky collaboration or a homage to NO I'd surely believe it if I didn't know any better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bt7q0nyrt0oThe "lead" bass sounds so much like Hooky's that it's possible the same pedals were used, even if not of the same brand. over on chain of flowers the Cure fan site, they have an interview with Robert from this summer that ran in the last issue of The Word. Interesting article all in all, but Barney and the band get a mention. Barney popped in on him mid interview to say hello at one of the shared dates they played; and then Robert talked about watching them from the side of the stage. His comment about them missing something with no Hooky was funny and echo'd many sentiments on here. Robert said something to the effect, pointing at Gallup "He and I got over each other, they could too." Pretty funny commentary from the man who may have had more drummers than Spinal Tap....
