For New Order I think they gave the address but not much else. The next issue a reader wrote in to say he had sent an enthusiastic letter to New Order and then got a reply scribbled on the back of his envelope from Hooky. It basically said: Fuck off, we don't have a fan club, don't send demanding letters like this.
I think Smash Hits then contacted NO and indeed had confirmation that they thought the fan letter was out of order so responded acordingly.
I am of course paraphrasing this story, it dates back to about 1985, so um, don't sue me for libel Hooky!
Well Smash Hits was mostly aimed at teenagers and I suspect the fan in question was guilty of nothing more than enthusiasm - something that most artists would perhaps recognise and appreciate. But not Hooky! So maybe it's not just you Perspex Orange, maybe it was him.
I suspect you can find this story online either in Rock's Back Pages, which you have to suscribe to (googling:
smash hits new order fan club letter Hook shows me the cached words: ""WE GOT a letter last week," Peter Hook, the bearded and occasionally belligerent bass player, the one who answers all New Order fan mail, is ...") Or somewhere in these
Smash Hits scansBut I'm too lazy to find the definitive link.
