A pretty good hour of tv.Grateful in a few of the videos that Steve & Gillian interjected halfway through to keep me interested otherwise watching stuff like that old footage of Can or Beefheart for 5 minutes could have got tiresome.

Was at times a bit like watching Beavis & Butthead.

Some good choices like the clip of Kate Bush doing Running Up That Hill on Top Of The Pops.

The Age Of Consent clip from Rock Around The Clock is still awkward/incredible/cringeing/fantastic/uncomfortable/life affirming to watch.Looks like they lifted the footage from YouTube though.Interesting to hear Steve & Gillian's opinion of it.

Never heard Gillian talk so much!

The BBC have lost the master. I think this was mentioned on another showing of it.

Watching it now.

Pretty great stuff.

S&G's choices are generally great (Grace Jones, Can, Soft Cell, Kraftwerk, Roxy, Bowie).
One word to describe Can - Bonkers!

Yep - That Rock Around The Clock performance is just brilliant. The beginning makes me wince a little as Barney desperately tries to find the notes he wants.
Steve is just the best drummer ever. The speed of both him and Bernard. Break-neck pace. Absolutely insane.

This performance is one of the many, many reasons I f**king love this band.

Never really listened to Can.Maybe i should look up some of their stuff, i might like it but i couldn't get into the clip on the programme.Always been aware of Captain Beefheart as recall John Peel being a big fan of his and often used to play his stuff so i've probably heard a lot of his songs. His stuff was always a bit mad wasn't it? And that's always something to be admired even if the music doesn't float yer boat.Always liked Grace Jones. That clip of her doing Private Life is brilliant. Not sure i ever heard her cover of She's Lost Control though i was aware she'd done it.

Steve was spot on nail on the head about LCD Soundsystem when they were watching that clip.He said something along the lines about that all the JD copyists that came in the wake made the mistake of trying to sound like them whereas LCD Soundsytem do their own thing, their own sound but the way they do it was similar to JD/NO.Take your influences but make your own sound out of it.Often used to think Doves were similar in that respect.

I forgot to watch or record this tonight. Just had a quick skip through on the iplayer. Enjoyed the Stevie Wonder story. Steveland Morris eh? I have learned something new. I bet that anecdote makes the book.

Someone told me i should get into Can a couple of years ago during a conversation about LCD Soundsystem. Even listening to the drums on the Can track in tonight's programme, you can hear some similarities between Can and LCD, IMHO. So it's funny that Steve says LCD are doing their own thing, because several people have now told me that they borrow heavily from Can, and of course Mr Murphy name-drops both Can and Captain Beefheart in Losing My Edge.

I was watching a film called Inherent Vice about this time last year. Was enjoying one of the tunes on the soundtrack so much that I Shazamed it, and it turned out to be Vitamin C by Can. In fact I must have been watching it on the 5th of September last year. Because as soon as it was over, I saw a tweet from Hot Chip's Al Doyle (who also plays live in... LCD Soundsystem), that Holger Czukay (aka Holger Schüring) of Can had died. And again I thought: I really must get into Can. But apart from some light "Youtubing" I haven't. Yet.

Also caught Beefhearts The Magic Band (without the man himself) at some time in the past ten years, playing his songs. I think it was at The Astoria 2 on London's Charing Cross Road, which has since been demolished, along with the main Astoria, I'm sad to say. I went knowing nothing by Beefheart apart from Big Eyed Beans From Venus which opens the Back To Mine New Order Compilation from 2002. Beefheart died in 2010, but I'm pretty sure he was still alive when I saw his band without him. I actually enjoyed the gig a lot more than I imagined I would.

Can's "Mushroom" from the Tago Mago album that Steve mentioned also features on Back To Mine along with some Roxy Music. I would have been surprised if there hadn't been any crossover between that comp and this programme TBH.

The whole Rock Around The Clock debacle was avoidable though, wasn't it? I may have got this wrong, but I thought they had a free day between the St Austell gig and the BBC performance, but opted to stay in Cornwall rather than travel to London. Glad they did though in a way - that whole performance is immense for all the contributing factors, Temptation remains my all time favourite live version of that song. Went to the Portsmouth Guildhall gig the next day.

Good point. I’d thought the St Austell gig was the night before, the Friday but checking the gigography it was on the Thursday night. The BBC appearance was on the Saturday, late afternoon/tea time. So yeah they had all of the Friday and most of Saturday to get there. In last night’s programme Steve says “it was a bank holiday Monday” Well, it was a bank holiday weekend but the BBC thing wasn’t on the bank holiday Monday, it was on the Saturday. Sorry to nit pick, Steve.

But yeah, they could have travelled to London on the Friday and had aadaquate preparation but like you say OldBlue, then the appearance might not have been as , erm, interesting!

I watched it live at the time and it was a car crash, but totally brilliant at the same time. What other band can be terrible and brilliant at the same time?!

However, I always wished they’d done more new songs in the appearance. Sooner Than You Think was the only new one we got. I think I recall in the interview in Sounds music paper a month or so after, Bernard said they had intended to do different songs from what they eventually did but because they got there late they had to change things. Maybe if they’d got their earlier and prepared more we might have got (at the time) new songs. They may have done Perfect Kiss or something, who knows.Ah well.

Yes all the equipment had overheated in the van whilst they were stuck in traffic leaving it out of tune / inoperable - so the planned set list got junked.

I think Hooky tells the story in his book about him and the crew arriving well in time, however, the rest of them were very late as they were stuck in traffic.

I uploaded the whole programme to YouTube but it was blocked immediately. Can't send it with WeTransfer as it's over 3GB so more than the 2GB limit i have with my WeTransfer. Can't stick it on my Mediafire as that's nearly full unless i delete stuff. So i'm trying Google Drive. Not really used this before but try this link.

Well this is odd, out of interest , were you able to play the video regardless of if you’d clicked the download in the window the link I gave above opens to? Out of curiosity i clicked on my link above and the new tab that opens allows me to click play and watch in a YouTube player.I’m signed out of my YouTube channel and out of my Google account but can play the video in a YouTube player even though YouTube blocked the video immediately last night.Wierd.

When i click on my link above a tab opens that looks like this.It has the download icon towards the top right and the video with a play button inviting you to press play.

UserPostedImage

When i press play it plays in a YouTube player, even though the video has been blocked and removed by YouTube.

UserPostedImage

My point is that if i can play the video even if i'm signed out of Google i can post any video that i've uploaded but then been blocked by YouTube. It's a way of posting YouTube videos that have been blocked.Or maybe it's just me that can play it but how i thought i'd be unable to if i'm not signed into my Google account i don't understand. If everyone else can simply play the video it's a handy thing to know for future refernce that any YouTube video that's blocked can still be viewed this way.Though it's a long way round.I could instead simply upload videos in future to Vimeo, who don't seem so bothered about copyright issues.

Sorry for delay. Was out all day yesterday so couldn't check.

I am able to play within a browser tab as well as download it.
Playing it directly on the browser doesn't appear to be a YouTube player; just a generic player.

I'm wondering that as Google and YouTube are connected services, maybe if you are signed into your Google account (to access your drive), it automatically opens it in Youtube.
Pure speculation though.

Edit - looking at your screenshots, these look the same as what I am seeing.

Well i guess it's not exactly a YouTube player but very YouTube ish.A generic player but similar to YouTube.Yeah i guess Google owns/is connected to YouTube.

A YouTube video looks like this

UserPostedImage

The generic player looks like this

UserPostedImage

Basically like a YouTube player. But anyway, not important.I guess as it's a generic Google player and Google own or are connected to YouTube they use the same thing.
