""The court cases with the others didn't help me viewing either band in a very rosy light," Hook told the BBC."

Then stop beating a dead horse by touring nothing but music from both bands, you knob.

Kind of feel these days that life’s too short to waste my energy talking about Peter Hook.But...

I thought he was already flogging old memorabilia a few years back? Didn’t he have a website set up to sell the stuff on? What’s the difference with this stuff now? Wasn’t the last lot stuff like him flogging an old school photo of him and Barney amongst other things? I guess this latest lot is like the article says his old bass guitars
etc

Always gets me how in interviews the interviewer never says “ But New Order didn’t split up, you left” when Hook says that New Order split . I guess the interviewer is too scared or intimidated ted by the thug. This BBC article doesn’t do that but I mean interviews in general that Hook does.

Well said.

“He told BBC News he had come to feel "something had to go" and that the memories associated with the Joy Division and New Order items had become tarnished.”

Dear Lord.

A) as you said, if the memories are tarnished, why try to relive them, night after night (answer: they arent sullied that much, presumably)
B) why sell anything at all? I can’t imagine he needs the money and, surely, he’ll regret this in the future (much like he did when he got rid of his Rickenbacker copy). I know a ‘portion’ of the proceeds will go to worthy causes but, if he wants to donate to charity, there are plenty of other ways to do it (i.e. without having to part with your soul).

A lot of this, especially with the ‘tarnished’ quotes, smacks a little of free publicity.

I honestly don't know who would want any of this stuff beyond a Hard Rock Cafe sort of place - I wouldn't want to spend a fortune on a guitar only to have to keep it in a case in case it got damaged, the novelty of owning such a thing and looking at it would soon wear off, and its not the sort of thing thats going to increase that much in value to make it a decent investment.

That's true of any music memorabillia, isn't Ken? At some point the appeal of specific artist's items ends. Someone somewhere is stuck with Benny Goodman's bowties.
The frustrating thing about Hooky is the woe-is-me story he seems to trot out with every sale of stuff. Why not just say 'it's time to sell it, others will appreciate more than me'?

Hooky's done an interview with John Robb. It kinda relates to the memorabilia sale which is why I've plonked it here.

I think this is the most interesting Hooky interview I've read in some time. John Robb apparently still doesn't know how to edit or use spellcheck, but don't let that put you off. Don't hold your breath for that new Monaco album though.

Louder Than War.

I don't know if Hooky's having a change of heart, or if the lawsuit really got to him, but he just sounds disappointed. It was only a year ago where he was still talking trash about the rest of the band. Now he's saying "you know I wish me and Barney can catch up again." I know English folks have a very different way of speaking to each other compared to Americans, but if a previous longtime coworker/friend called me an insult at every other word, I wouldn't want that person near me ever again.

It sucks, especially for the fans. Like I get why Hooky was frustrated during 2003-2007. Not being able to tour would probable make you constantly ask yourself "well what's the point of making music?" But at the same time, it sounded like there was this rivalry between him and Barney that only Hooky acknowledged.

I personally never wanna see him in New Order again. I would feel conned, it would just be getting back together for a big pay day and shaft the fans. Barney, Steve and Gillian have moved on and are creating new New Order music and reworking tracks all of which is great. If you wanna tribute band playing 30 year old tracks then fair enough.

As for the auction Clown

Let's all wave our arms about !

It was clear in the early 2000s he didnt enjoy being in N.O, raging on stage and not happy at being just the bass player - hence the ongoing vanity projects that keep his name in lights. (ha, no pun intended).

Its a shame The Light no longer have their original bass player either.

^^^^^THIS

If it was just your typical rock star ego/money woes between him and Barney, I could understand an eventual reunion. But once he started taking jabs at Gillian - especially when she was fighting cancer - he became dead to me. She's the heart of that band, and it's no wonder they released one of their absolute best studio albums once she rejoined. Without Hook.

I never want him anywhere near them again.

Latest news about this auction (via an email):

"We unfortunately have to inform you that the following lots have been withdrawn from the sale:
Lot 8 - the guitar books
Lots 145, 146, 147, 148, 149, 150, 155, 156, 157, 204, and 205 (various reel to reel tapes and DVD recordings.
Lot 210 (the Warsaw Middlesborough cassette has been removed from the lot)
Lot 159 - Ian Curtis and Annik letters

We apologise for the late notice and any disappointment, however with the exception of lots 159, the withdrawals are outside of the ours and Peter's control."

Looks like Barney and or Steve may have objected to the tapes being sold etc.

I can't recall what the "guitar books" are and I don't have the catalogue to hand. Maybe these are the books him and Bernard learned guitar/bass from.

As regards the very personal "lot 159", looks like Peter had a change of heart.
I'm very glad. Selling something so personal to the highest bidder seemed... well, you know...
He's done the right thing, I feel.

We can only speculate on why the other items got pulled, but I can't say I would blame Messrs Sumner and Morris, if they are the ones responsible.
It seems a little like Hooky is selling items that are part of the fabric / history of the band. It must get up their noses a bit.
I remember a similar thing with Depeche Mode, where Alan Wilder, a few years after leaving the band, sold a load of his equipment which had DM samples / sounds / backing tracks etc. stored on them. That didn't go down well either.

All of this selling of such cherished items seems a little like 'cutting one's nose off to spite your face'. Much like burning photos of your ex.

i remember the Wilder auctions vividly. however, i don't remember the other Mode members being sore at Alan for doing it. are there articles on this subject?

I can’t remember where I heard it. I think I read about it somewhere years ago.
Either that or I heard someone talk about it (maybe a vid or radio interview). Sorry I can’t be specific.

I don’t think Martin or Fletch we’re very keen on Alan (sadly). Always had a sneaking suspicion that Dave was much more appreciative of the amount that Alan contributed to the band. I remember that one of the interviews on the bonus DVDs that came with the LP reissues, Dave questioned whether Martin was a little bit envious of Alan’s muscianship.

Bargain Hunt Update:

Someone has paid £21,000 for a Joy Div flightcase. £5,800 for chimes not used on Atmosphere with 4 chimes missing. £1000 for a Hohner green melodica you can get for £40 on Ebay. Up to £9000 for various posters. Think there was everything apart from JD oven gloves.

Looks like he tried to sell Bernard's guitar books he'd borrowed but was blocked.

Presumably, Mr Hook has had months to withdraw the letters, but only decided to withdraw them the night before the sale.
I therefore wonder if, when liaising with Hook about the other items (withdrawn on the same day as the letters), Mr Sumner / Mr Morris had a quiet word with him about the letters; something along the lines of ‘what the Hell are you doing, Peter?’

Presumably they couldn’t legally stop him selling them (unlike, potentially, the books / tapes), so may have decided to appeal to his conscience. It certainly seems very likely that someone had a word with him, else why offer them in the first place, why not withdraw them sooner etc.

Whatever happened, I’m glad that saner heads have prevailed.

What does worry me slightly is that, in recent months, things have been ‘relatively’ cordial between the two parties (i.e. no use of the word ‘Twatto’, the sentence ‘wonky table leg’ etc.). Presumably this has followed whatever agreement was made in court.

With this very public (and potentially incendiary) message on New Order’s website from Bernard and Stephen to Hooky, the fans and the general public, there seems substantial potential for the back-biting and general bickering to resume.

I hope not.
