So, what do we think the story is with this track on the Glasgow DVD?

It sounds to me like it's got the studio version of the song played over the live sound, with the latter very quiet in the background.

I wonder why this was done.
Maybe the audio quality of the gig was poor on the video tape.
Or, perhaps Bernard's vocals weren't up to scratch (I've got the bootleg, and they don't sound too bad to me. Relatively speaking, of course. This is Bernard we're talking about here. Big Grin )

Oh, and if anyone hasn't seen this, check it out here.

If there's any doubt that this is the studio version played over the live video, look right at the end of the video. Bernard's singing without moving his lips.

The sound on the video isn't a great mix so I think Steve used the studio version to beef it up while compiling the Rare and Unseen Footage DVD.

I've since synced up the desk tape to that video which has a better balance on the whole. I think it's very likely to be used on the Technique box when we get to it.

I was hoping you'd respond, Johnny.

Thanks for the explanation. It seemed a very weird choice and was quite jarring.

Great news that you've managed to work your magic on this and will keep my fingers crossed that this will be on the 'Technique' box set.

... Mmmm, 'Technique' box set... Man, I want one.
Best. LP. Ever. :-)

Yeah, definitely some studio recording in there. Dug out the Glasgow DVD just the other night funnily enough, after reading the section about the Cork 1983 gig in Dec’s book where he mentions about video of that surfacing 25 years later.Had kind of forgotten for a few years about the rare and unseen stuff on that DVD .

You can hear the weirdness of the original video audio mix on the other track 'Dream Attack'. Very echoey and just odd.

i used the detroit audio edited to the shoreline 89 video, sure it wasnt perfect but with bpm the same, audio mostly fits and a far more gratifying view than the double tracked shoreline audio - we need prime quality footage of the defining 89 tour

so yes please for the technique box unleash everything u got, engage with the analog loyalist and make this vital era shine.

makes me wonder johnny, what else is hidden in the vaults..
shoreline, san francisco (?) from the run2 robert frank video, bwc, totp, gmex? this period deserves better than what the 1963 footage gave us soundwise. dream attack was much better.

im good to sell my spleen for pro shot footage of mr disco

Mr. Disco. What a track!

However great Side 1 is, nothing compares to the consecutive masterpieces of Run, Mr. Disco, Vanishing Point and (probably my favourite song ever) Dream Attack.

We've got the Run 2 footage, though it's very patchy with no full tracks. It's from three consecutive nights from what I can tell, 16th, 17th, 18th Jun 89. I'm hoping to make something of it though there's not enough for a full set. I think the point was to just get some good shots that can be inserted into the Run 2 video.

Big World Cafe: would you believe that the master for the main show is missing, if we use it it'll have to come from the best VHS we can find.

Johnny, not to detract from the PCL boxed set (which I adore, thanks for everything you contributed towards this release), but what are the likely timescales of the future box set releases?

Given they're thinking of going as far as WFTSC/Lost Sirens and maybe including Substance, there could be as many as a further 7 sets. Are they hoping to accelerate the frequency of the release schedule, or do you think this is a much longer term project (i.e. one per year)?

Cheers!

I don't know really, it would certainly be desireable to do more than one a year, though it is difficult to achieve.

Damn - I had that on VHS for years and digitised it about 10 years ago, then binned the tape. Of course if I still had the tape now I could do a much clearer transfer
with more modern tools. Hopefully it was fairly widely taped and you locate a decent copy, as it was a great performance of 3 Technique songs

I have the Big World tracks on a so-obviously-bootlegged-DVD-it-isn't-offensive, um, DVD. It's the image they used for the BBC live album - I'd recognise that dolphin anywhere.
The Glasgow DVD Part 2 is the only worthwhile rerelease from the London years. Still a bleedin' racket though.
A very distant relative of my girlfriend (my new one, not Mel C) was PIL's sound engineer on the PIL/NO/Sugarpubes tour. He used to tape every show but just the PIL bits.

Have always longed for a decent Technique Tour video. The Run2 footage looked familiar at the time (I was at the Irvine Meadows gig on the 16th) but I thought it was just wishful thinking. Thanks for sort of confirming.

would love to hear the PiL audio from that tour. i saw them twice in 89. headlining at the Universal Amphitheatre(with Flesh for Lulu), and the Irvine show with NO, and the Sugarcubes. funny how you mention Mel C. i saw her solo show back in 99, and Steve Jones joined her on stage for her cover of Anarchy in the UK.
