New Order release new ‘World In Motion’ merch in time for Euro 2020

Official t-shirts, bucket hats and footballs have been released in honour of the classic football anthem

By
Patrick Clarke
8th June 2021

New Order have released a new line of merch inspired by their classic 1990 football single ‘World In Motion’ to mark Euro 2020, which kicks off this weekend.

The track was initially released in 1990 to mark the FIFA World Cup in Italy, and featured vocal contributions from that year’s England Football Team and a memorable rap from striker John Barnes.

Now, the band have released brand new t-shirts, hoodies, joggers, bucket hats and footballs emblazoned with the track’s title and artwork.

‘World In Motion’ remains New Order’s only ever Number One single, topping the charts for two weeks in 1990.

It has since returned to the charts coinciding with subsequent football tournaments. A re-recorded version reached Number 43 during the 2002 World Cup, while the original hit 22 and 48 during the 2010 and 2018 World Cups respectively.

Listing ‘World In Motion’ among the greatest ever football songs earlier today (June 8), NME described the track as being “melodically up there with New Order’s finest singles. ‘World In Motion’ would still stand proud even if it had nothing to do with the beautiful game.”

What's the difference between World in Motion and World in Motion 2002? 12 years.

Was it actually re-recorded??

I refused to buy the track in 1990, as I was an Ireland fan in Ireland enjoying Ireland's first ever World Cup. There was no way I was walking into a record shop to ask for the English WC song.

But in 2002 a little while after the WC was over, I saw the CD single in HMV and quietly bought it, as I realised that Such A Good Thing was on there - which I didn't have.
So I guess I have this version somehwere. I don't remember noticing that it was different from the 1990 version. But then I'm really not an expert on this song.

Incidentally I see John Barnes has been in the "news" this week for recreating the rap, 31 years on.
As if he hasn't already been doing this for years at every available opportunity...

To my knowledge it wasn't rerecorded or even remastered. The selling-point was an original B-side.

I dug out the CD single of the 2002 release last night and scanned the inner for any indication it being a re-recording but found nothing so didn’t even bother playing it . I did notice however that as well as the Such Good Thing track the CD includes the No Alla Violenza remix of WIM. Don’t remember that being on there but I do now know I have that mix on CD . Will give it a play later tonight. Euros are almost upon us so it’s an excuse to give it a spin.

Edit: just looked at the original 1990 CD single and the No Alla Violenza mix is on there too.Doh!

The article should say re-released instead of re-recorded. Whether it's a typo or the journalist believes it is anyone's guess. I know most on here are just joking about it...

I personally prefer Such a Good Thing. The music is fantastic, Hooky gets in some great bits and the lyrics are not so bad in the context of what Bernard was settling for on the Waiting for/Lost Sirens tracks.

World in Motion, on the other hand, followed Technique, which is his finest set of lyrics and contained some decent tunes. It's understandable that they reined in Keith Allen to do the dirty work over their (obviously rushed) backing track.

In stereotypical New Order fashion, there are three different versions/edits of the 'No Alla Violenza Mix':

5:41 - on the Canadian CD single
5:20 - on the 1990 and 2002 UK CD singles
4:13 - on the UK Remix 12"

I still clearly remember John Peel playing one of the versions of this mix at the end of one of his shows prior to its original release - as well as the Carabinieri mix a few days before (the first time I ever heard the song - and my favourite mix of it). Found it surprising when I bought the single and the main version had 'Love's got the world in motion' as the lyric, rather than the alternate 'We've got the world in motion' you hear on both Andy Weatherall No Alla/Carabinieri mixes - always preferred the song without its talk of love!

I'd guess that the Canadian version is the original, main version, and the UK edits were made to fit within whatever the total running time limits were to keep them eligible for the singles chart back then. But who knows!?

I think there were anecdotes/threats at the time of the 2002 that they were going to get David Beckham to re-record John Barnes rap, but I'm sure that never came anywhere close to actually coming to fruition.

When we eventually get to the 'Technique' definitive edition, it'd be fun to hear some of the outtake raps that were apparently recording in 1990 by the other squad members...!

I no longer have vinyl, but I recall a bit of dialogue (on one of the dub mixes?) of someone, presumably Keith Allen, saying "Who do you think you are, fucking Phil Collins or what?". This bit was not on the CD single versions.

I have the remix 12” vinyl which includes the Subbuteo mix and dub but probably only played those mixes a few times back in 1990. Will give em a spin later and report back on if I can find the Phil Collins bit from Keith Allen

I remember the Phil Collins line but can't remember which remix off hand.

The closest I think the band came to releasing a 'new' version of WIM, was the Mark Bell remix on this compilation:

https://www.discogs.com/...iful-Game/release/508572

I seem to remember that it was pretty decent, if not particularly remarkable.

There were some other decent tracks on the compilation too, including the obligatory 'Three Lions'.
I may be recalling incorrectly, but I seem to think that that was the first time I heard the track (it appears that both the LP and 'Three Lions' were released on the same day; there was a good chance I bought the LP on release day).

Some of the tracks were specifically football related (the excellent 'England's Irie and 'Eat My Goal'), whilst others were more generic songs, representative of the era (Supergrass' 'Alright' etc.).
A pretty decent compilation, IMO.

I might just give both WIM and that LP a spin later today. Getting in the mood for the Euro's.
C'mon En-Gerr-Land!

Listening to the Subbuteo Mix and Subbuteo Dub just now. A minute or so into the dub there’s someone who says something like “ who do yer you think you are? Mmm Phil Collins or what?” . It’s a little hard to make out exactly what is said but it’s pretty much that and any original mention of “ fucking” is kind of played backwards or something and ends up sounding like “mmm” instead. At the end there’s what sounds like Tony Wilson saying “ You’ve got 25 minutes “ and then the Phil Collins thing is repeated and then that’s the end of the track. Well, there yer go. Don’t remember that but like I said I haven’t played it since probably 1990.

Football songs are a bit old hat these days. Like Christmas songs, all the best ones are now years old. Vindaloo was the last great one but I can’t even be bothered to give that one a spin now like I used to when a World Cup or Euros comes around.

It's the Alternative Subbuteo Dub (per Jeb's Recycle project. Got rid of my vinyl but not 50's files). The "mmm" you're hearing is the censoring of the offending word.

That’s the conclusion I was leaning heavily towards but without 100% conclusive evidence and not having heard any other mix where the word is mentioned without censorship I didn’t want to and indeed couldn’t say with complete authority that the mmm I was hearing was a censoring of the f word.

(Just remembered the scene in the film What We Do in the Shadows where the vampires run into a pack of werewolves. Harsh words are exchanged before the pack leader scolds one of his own and says "We're werewolves, not swearwolves".)

That snippet is Paul Gasgoine, not Keith Allen. Does just sound like an "mmm" rather than a reversed or censored swear word.
