Was just reading this myself, below sounds promising:

However it has given them the impetus to start writing again, she reveals. “Since Rebel we thought we could possibly put an EP out,” she says. “I’m not promising, but we have been working on some ideas, so you never know.”

Yeah, doesn't get more specific or commital than that. It'll be out by dindins.

What a work ethic, looks like they're really going for it now. Zero songs in 6 years and if Be a Rebel is anything to go by that's probably a good thing.

ACR knocked out 3 EPs this past year just by getting in a studio and actually playing together. It's what groups do - write songs and play live. NO seem like they've lost the spark they had around Music Complete. Old age I suppose, but nothing wrong with taking an early retirement (please).

I know what you're saying.
I guess there's more impetus for A Certain Ratio to write and record new songs.
I doubt any of them make much money from either new music or archive stuff, but they still need to keep income rolling in.

Bernard, Hooky, Steve and Gillian are, presumably, wealthy enough to not be worried about cash.
I guess it's more difficult to stay motivated to haul yourself into a darkened recording studio, when you've got a yacht moored off the coast of Capri. Wink Big Grin

If they record something new, great! I'll certainly give it a go.

However, if they never record any new material, although I'll be a bit disappointed, I'd totally understand it.
The way I see it, the band have provided me with enough material to last my life-time (11 studio LPs, 2 x Substance LPs, other stuff etc.).

Besides, Bernard is 65 now. I'd certainly like to be retired by the time I reach that grand age. The only thing that might stop me is the size of my pension pot (not something that would be of much concern to the band, I doubt).

Edited by user 07 September 2021 06:50:59(UTC)  | Reason: Thought Bernard was 64. My mistake - he's already qualified for the free bus pass...

ACR had full time jobs until recently and think they only 'retired' when they signed for Mute. I'd imagine it must be enough to live on but not enough for a mansion in Cheshire or a yacht.

I agree NO have done more than enough, just wish they'd do something more interesting in their twilight years as it all feels a bit corporate. Maybe try some ambient jazz? At least they've not gone Classical or toured albums like many of their contemporaries.

I'll be on the buses when I'm 65!

It's your lucky day https://lwtheatres.co.uk...e-sound-of-joy-division/
Remember all that crap about churning out EPs after the kids went to school? I dared to suggest it was bolox and as usual got the crap kicked out of me for spoiling the fun.
Seriously, there's no point getting damp panties over this kind of comment. Even if it happens, it'll take Fucking ages and there'll be an official announcement from all parties cuntcerned. Meanwhile... It's like when my girlfriend's mate
Mel B made and off-the-cuntff comment that it'd be cool if Spice reformed for the royal wedding. That was all she said and the matter was never mentioned again by any Spice, but some fans actually tuned in specially and complained on their bacefook page. Duh.

Just got round to reading this today. Is everyone else able to see the same Royal Mail advert on the left & right sides of the article? Weird coincidence with the starlings, no?

Gillian:
Quote:
[Arthur Baker's] in the video for Confusion and he’s done Touched By The Hand of God remixes that we all liked.

This reinforces my opinion that the single version(s) of Touched was really a remix rather than just "produced/mixed by". But because we had never heard the track before, they didn't bother calling it a remix at the time.

Gillian
Quote:
Be A Rebel was actually a song that was left over from sessions for the band’s 2015 album Music Complete. “Bernard said it would be good for a track,” Gilbert says. “I think we were doing it for something else like an advert but that fell through.

New Order doing advert music?! (Oh yes, they did for Sunkist but the ad agency couldn't convince Sunkist to go with their idea..."Rob told us not to"? Pah! Cobblers.)

These noises from Gillian suggest to me that NO haven't concluded that BAR is the end of their output.

I'm curious to hear these songs below that are registered with copyright services. Although who knows if they're actually any good?..

Well, they did that radio jingle, which I feel is reminiscent of 'Be A Rebel'.

Hmm, I'm not sure I was even aware of these. If I was, I'd forgotten about them.
Very interesting indeed. Thanks!

It looks like 'I Can't Quit Ya' comes from the same school of songwriting as 'Hey Now What You Doing'. Big Grin

I wonder why a) they're specifically registered under Bernard's name and b) why he used the Dickin name.

As regards a), are they registered under the other band members names too? Not sure how these things are 'filed'.
In respect of b), I guess it might be as simple as that was the name he used when he first registered a song (in the 'Warsaw' days) and he's never bothered to change it.

(I'm now humming the words 'Rock 'N Roll Soldiers' to Marley's 'Buffalo Soldiers', btw)

I think someone may be getting confused with The New Order.

Never knew people thought Touched by the Hand of God was mysterious. The original version was on the Salvation! soundtrack.

Well I certianly didn't own the Salvation! soundtrack at the time of Touched's single release. I hadn't even heard of it til I saw it mentioned on the 12" label.
Discogs has the soundtrack release date as '88 but the single release date as '87.

Yeah, you didn't honestly think they were sitting on a bunch of shit did you?
Maybe they think BAR is a proverbial damp squib to end on.
I think the film came out and then the single followed by the OST. I bought the single and only read about the movie later, in the Record Mirror article.

That's why I used the word "someone", I figured it was the source, not you.

You're right, the single was issued first. I believe I picked up both the soundtrack and single on the same trip to Los Angeles in 1988 so didn't make the distinction. I was delighted as they'd opened a show I attended in 1987 with TbtHoG and I was dying get my hands on it. I was anticipating the gig for weeks (months?) and was baffled that they opened with something unfamiliar.

Movie release: May 1987
TBTHOG single release: December 1987
Salvation! soundtrack release: February 1988

I distinctly remember cutting class in December of my senior year of high school, walking into my favorite record shop, and finding the CD single for TBTHOG. I think import CD singles were about $10 then. Bought it, went back to school, and couldn't wait to get home that afternoon to listen to it.

Yeah, but as I mentioned, they didn't do them! I'm wondering if they think BAR is s relatively lightweight final, especially after MC proved their first unanimous thumbs up since 1989.
