Fucking hate Madonna.
I never bother with these things cos they're sooooooooooooo subjective and you're bound to disagree with something. It's like when they do all the solo Beatles albums - there are almost seventy of the fuckers: what are the chances it'll be exactly the same as yours? Le's be honest, even yours changes all the time. There are times when I listen to Macca's debut every day, and times when I agree most of it should never have been released.
Gillian the epitome of cool? She's about as cool as my grandma. 'Er yes, ha ha ha ha!'

almost as Off Topic as Madonna and Paul McCartney:

Is this what Shaun Ryder eats?
Does it come laced with MDMA? If so, I'll have some - washed down with orginal cocaine-infused cola. Yum. Smile

[EDIT Oh the advert doesn't seem to run when you press play on this embed. Oh well, there's no Mondays/Factory/Hacienda music etc on it anyway]

Following on from the Sparks Brothers film talk, in which they talked about collabarating with proper film directors and those projects not working out. This one got made and is released in the UK on Amazon Prime next month.

Story by Ron and Russell, starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard.

I went to see The Sparks Brothers at the cinema yesterday: the trailer for Annette was on before it together with the one for Last Night in Soho so quite a complete little Sparks/Edgar Wright package.

I didn't know that Annette was going to be on Amazon Prime but I'd rather see it in a decent cinema (although I don't know how many in this country will be putting it on, its not exactly multiplex material).

Stephen and Gillian are in the film maybe two or three times, maybe 1 or 2 minutes screen time tops (there is also a quick burst of Blue Monday when KROQ is mentioned too) I enjoyed the film but it goes out of its way to cover ALL of their albums so its quite a substantial film to watch.

Yes that chimes with my "a little long" comments. For the casual viewer, I think they might have considered keeping it under 2 hours.

In other urelated news:
BBC 6 Music have been doing "all day raves" on the weekends as some of you will doubtless know.
Last weekend it was the '80s, this weekend the '90s. Funnily enough I didn't spot much NO in their 80's shows, but admittedly I didn't listen to everything.

Yesterday morning Radliffe & Maconie did an hour at 9am which they called the Hacienda Mix, with a blurb that goes like this:

Quote:
Today, as part of 6 Music’s 90s All Day Rave, Mark and Stuart celebrate the sound of iconic Manchester nightclub The Hacienda with an energising mix of acid house, soulful synth and dance classics

Opened by local record company Factory Records in collaboration with the band New Order, the Manchester venue became a world-famous beacon of dance music and rave culture in the late 1980s and 1990s. Mark and Stuart spin a selection of tracks to get the Saturday raving started including music from the likes of Derrick May, Candi Staton and 808 State

You can listen to it Here.

The Blessed Madonna (formerly Black Madonna) also does a three hour show which gets broken up into 3 seperate hour-long downloads or streams on the BBC Sounds app/website (why not just one 3-hour show?). In one of those hours she played NO's Spooky (minimix), which isn't one that I would have put money on.
You can listen to that hour Here.

Yes I heard Blessed Madonna play Spooky on her show last night. Of all the mixes of that track, she played in my opinion the worst one, the Republic album version I think. Never was that taken by that version. Some of the remixes are a lot better.

Listened to RadMac’s one hour Hac mix as part of the all day rave on catch up. They also played Fine Time right at the start of their show at 7am.

I watched New Order last night.

The producers tried to get it nominated as Mexico's entrant for Best International film at the 2021 Oscars, though they didn't succeed. There were suggested parallels with 2020's Best Picture (and best International Film), Parasite. And yes, there is a "Rich v Poor" theme present here that will be familiar to Parasite's vewers.
I thought this would be a hard hitting but fun thriler when I first heard about it. It's not really a thriller or fun though. It makes Parasite look like a comedy - which it kinda was.
Not just about a wedding that gets disrupted by political hijackers, but a full-on actual uprising/coup, hence "New Order". And by the end of the film it gets very stark and a little confusing (if you're not paying attention).
Nothing to do wth the band of course, although there were moments in the film that reminded me of the video for The Chemical Brothers Out Of Control, which does have a NO connection...

Thanks Michael.

In respect of 'Vietnam', I've always wondered whether New Order were aware of the Jimmy Cliff original at the time they wrote 'Love Vigilantes'.

Both records have similar themes.

Not a huge fan of these carbon copies, but at least they recorded a newbie. Macca's cuntribution is just from Flaming Pie.
There was also Cohesion https://www.discogs.com/...Cohesion/release/2798087 - New Order, Other Two and Monaco but nothing original. Macca's Is though. So it all balances.
We All Stand has a military theme too (I studied at Cambridge). Reminds me of PIL's Go Back, though I find the PIL track more effettive.

While I think Love Vigilantes is the better song, it's clearly been ripped off from Jimmy Cliff. Their cover of Vietnam was an acknowledgement.

^ BM on Strictly again? It was also used a year or two back when Peter Andre danced wasn’t it?

Perfect Kiss on Blessed Madonna’s show on 6Music tonight, right at start of show I think , I turned the radio on when driving home. She did a cheeky edit of the 12” by jumping from the end of Barney’s vocal straight to the last couple of minutes. Vanishing Point also on 6Music the other morning

Not sure if this has been mentioned earlier in the replies but there is a New Order track on the recently released NOW That's What I Call HMV compilation, which is exclusive to said store (and their web site).

Disc 4 has the 7" version of True Faith. Same mastering as the recent-ish Singles reissue. A shame as I'd hoped the a remastered full length 5:54 version was being sneaked out, but to no avail.

It's funny, the 7" version once upon a time was virtually impossible to find on CD (except on that Qwest promo) but since it got its first airing on TOTAL, it seems to have become the default version of the track instead of the full length version we were used to for many years.

Anyway, the compilation is competitively priced for 5 CDs but be warned, there is a helluva lot of cheese on it. Eye watering fromage in places.

I have it on the True Faith CDV and the Qwest True Faith peony promo. It's listed as (The Morning Sun Remix / Edit) on the promo but sounds the same.

I think the 4:10 (Album Edit) might be the more rare of the two to have on CD.

If you listened to all three hours of her 25th September show(s) you would notice that in the first hour, as well as TPK she played Getting Away With it and described both tracks as "perfect".

In the second hour she had Mike Pickering on as part of her Manchester special. Tracks in that second hour included ACR, Quando Quango, Klein & MBO's Dirty Talk, The Smiths, The Mondays, oh and more NO - Confusion and BM '88. Show available Here. Each of the three hours is broken up into one hour segments on BBC Sounds.

One other track choice by Mike Pickering worth a mention was The Peech Boys: Dont Make Me Wait.
Sample spot: I noticed the laugh in that track is the laugh sampled in S Express' Theme from S Express. Also the vocals "come with me, tonight's the night,
can't you see I wanna be with you... I ain't gonna wait no more" from Altern 8's Active 8. I had always assumed Alternate 8 had written that vocal themselves. Guess not.
In fact if you go on the WhoSampled website you'll find that the 'Special Version' of that Peech Boys track has been sampled in 106 tracks (!).
Does anyone care besides me? Probaby not.
