no. because they wouldn't want to. and most people wouldn't want to hear.
as long as they can come up with something every once in a (long) while, thats good enough.
I couldn’t agree more.
As I said, I’m not against them ‘looking back’. In fact, I want them to (although would still obviously welcome new songs).
We’re just pointing out that, when Sumner says ‘we never look back’, it’s patently untrue.
Re-releasing an archive recording? Looking back.
Walking out on stage to give their fans the hits they’re craving? Looking back.
Lost Sirens, Be A Rebel? Dusting off stuff that’s been kicking around on a hard-drive for years and giving it a polish.
And let’s be honest, the above counts for 95% of the band’s current activities.
In the past decade, the only things I would say where they weren’t looking back were a) signing to Mute, b) recording and releasing Music Complete and c) the reimagining of old songs for the MiF gigs (although the latter can certainly still be classed as ‘looking back’, but in an interesting way).
As I said, I’m absolutely fine with this. I (desperately!) want them to release the Definitive Editions. I want them to play old songs at gigs.
I just find it a completely ridiculous statement to say ‘we never look back’.
They do. Constantly.
