Really enjoyed that. Thanks!

Just as a side note, they mention 'Hooky left' a few times. Wonder what he thinks of that. ;-)

Thanks, a nice interview to read over the holidays, if nothing revolutionary. Found the bit that Steve would write more books interesting!

Nice interview, thanks for the link (I very rarely go into the NO website to see whats been posted): just one thought: Bernard saying 'creativity is about the future. If you're just about the past, it's not creative, is it?' seems a bit rich from a band that haven't released a proper new record for nearly seven years, regardless of the setlists if they don't write anything new, they will end up like Mr Hook & The Light.

Agreed.
I always think it’s a ridiculous statement when Sumner repeatedly says ‘we never look back’.

Surely every time they trudge out Blue Monday and the other fifteen archive hits at a gig, they’re ‘looking back’.

Edit:
Just to clarify, I’m not against them revisiting their back catalogue; I’m just taking umbrage at Sumner’s daft reasoning.

i don't judge them by what they play live.

we know they're just going to stick to the hits.
(or once in awhile slip in a lesser known song).

what would you have them do. play music complete songs? get ready? lost sirens?
no. because they wouldn't want to. and most people wouldn't want to hear.

as long as they can come up with something every once in a (long) while, thats good enough.

i've always felt their best days were finished in the mid 80's, so whatever they put out now,
is just because they feel like it.

I couldn’t agree more.

As I said, I’m not against them ‘looking back’. In fact, I want them to (although would still obviously welcome new songs).

We’re just pointing out that, when Sumner says ‘we never look back’, it’s patently untrue.

Re-releasing an archive recording? Looking back.
Walking out on stage to give their fans the hits they’re craving? Looking back.
Lost Sirens, Be A Rebel? Dusting off stuff that’s been kicking around on a hard-drive for years and giving it a polish.

And let’s be honest, the above counts for 95% of the band’s current activities.

In the past decade, the only things I would say where they weren’t looking back were a) signing to Mute, b) recording and releasing Music Complete and c) the reimagining of old songs for the MiF gigs (although the latter can certainly still be classed as ‘looking back’, but in an interesting way).

As I said, I’m absolutely fine with this. I (desperately!) want them to release the Definitive Editions. I want them to play old songs at gigs.
I just find it a completely ridiculous statement to say ‘we never look back’.

They do. Constantly.

Great news!
Fingers crossed. If the new songs are up to the same level of quality as Music Complete, I’ll be very happy.

Wow great news to hear, probably two more years before a new album, I wonder what Bernard was doing in Iceland with that producer last year

Fantastic to hear! Thanks!
Time moves more quickly these days. The gap between Republic and Brutal was 5 years? Seemed like forever then
