Good stuff.

I have a programme that downloads iPlayer stuff. Weirdly, it doesn’t always work for some reason, but I’ll give it a go.

As a preview to this documentary, Hooky was interviewed on Jo Whiley's Radio 2 programme yesterday.

Here it is (Hooky chat starts around 50:50):

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001dd0d

She also played a couple of his song choices and BLT earlier in the show.

Looking forward to this and hope it's not the same old faces turning up to talk about the good old days.

HAC Bingo:

Steve had to pay to get in.
Rob wanted somewhere he could ogle birds.
Hooky got Familyman Giggs thrown out for sitting on his car.
The stage was in the wrong place.
No one paid for drinks.
It was empty for 5 years.
Ryder & Co brought in the drugs that ignited the UK dance scene.
The sound was terrible.
It was cold, unless it was busy.

I'm happy that the band were involved with the club. After all, it's one of the many cool things about New Order that make them stand out from the rest. One of the myriad reasons I love them.
I'm also pleased that I managed to get to the Haç whilst it was open.

However, generally speaking, I'm mostly bored by talk of the club. I was never a big clubber and hearing how a load of people had 'spiritual awakenings' at the place during '88-90, is just a bit dull for me.
To be honest, I'd much rather hear about Kelly's design for the club and the early "live venue" days, than those 'halcyon' days of Shaun and Bez dealing E in a dark corner, patrons "off their tits" etc.

That being said, I'll certainly watch it. I'm just not expecting anything particularly interesting. Well, for me, anyway.

I have to agree Perspex. I found it more interesting in the early days and saw a number of live bands including our heroes in 1986. It was terribly managed but the early days were much more interesting, I sound like an old fart but by the time they let Pete Waterman in to film the Hitman & Her it became a bit of a novelty.

The choice of a certain family of bouncers didnt help but it was too mainstream by then with coaches coming from far and wide. I had to sweet talk them one night to let us in as my mate had trainers on saying he had come all the way from Scotland. Dont think I went back after that.

maybe, because:

Haçienda 1982 is endorsed by New Order’s Peter Hook (who owns the rights to the club’s brand),

I'm not inclined to agree.

Hooky put out out several House/Acid House Hacienda compilations in 2006, 2009 and 2012. Two of which were clearly after he left NO. The timing for the '06 release could be ambiguous.

2006: The Hacienda Classics. Two NO tracks.
2009: The Hacienda Acid House Classics. One NO track.
2012: Hacienda 30. One NO track (Hooky is specifically named as the DJ for Disc 3 which is the disc with NO's Fine Time on it).

I actually think he went out of his way to ensure a NO track was on each of these comps. But I suspect he was less involved (besides licensing the name) with this new Cherry Red compilation...

I thought the Documentary was just ok. All of the interviews were worthwhile but the narrative kind of skipped over a few things. I was especially surprised by the claim it ultimately closed just because Rob Gretton had enough of it. I suppose its drawn out demise wouldn't have been compelling viewing.

Yep, i agree about it being just ok. My main take away from it is that it all happened a very, very, very long time ago and the story has been told a million times. The doc would be more interesting to the younger generation who may not be familiar with the story.

Yes it seemed to skip over a lot but then it did only have one hour to cram everything in. Seemed to be no mention of how it all went downhill with all the gangs and guns ruining the place.

Well, it was alright.

Some nice archive footage, especially that lovely moment where Rob kissed Tony, and Tony is obviously peeved at something.

But, yeah, it was mainly just going over the same old ground as previous documentaries and not a lot of new stuff.

Watched it again today as last night i was a little drunk after an afternoon in the pub. Think i enjoyed it more on second watch. Enjoyed the clip of Madonna performing as part of The Tube , Channel 4 broadcast from the club in 1984. I do recall watching that at the time. Mike Pickering made a good point that Madonna making an appearance kind of tied in with the New York club scene she'd come from and which formed the inspiration for the creation of the Hacienda. On that edition of The Tube there was also a great bit with Marcel King singing his classic Factory single Reach For Love which sadly didn't feature in the doc but look it up online, it's fab.

I guess Noel Gallagher made a good point comparing the Hac to a lot else in life that anything that goes on long enough turns to shit in the end , lol. Kinda true.

It tried to fit too much into the space of an hour and apart from that clip of Madonna there wasn't anything actually filmed in the Hacienda: if it wasn't for the appearances of Stephen, Peter, Noel Gallagher and Shaun Ryder I would say it was a waste of time. What does the Mondays and the Roses both being on the same episode of TOTOP have to do with anything?

I'm fairly sure a lot of the footage of dancers was in the Hac. And there appeared to be CCTV footage too, those grainy and slightly blurred images later on. Also, footage from the early 80s of punters sitting and hanging out ( lifted from the Riverside BBC feature from 1983?) and clips of an empty Hac , soundtracked by Durrutti Column. Oh and the clip of The Smiths. And The Hit Man & Her clips. So i think there was a lot more stuff filmed in the club used than just the Madonna clip.

But yeah, it wasn't a great doc, just ok. Not sure i can put my finger quite on why, obviously the short one hour wasn't quite long enough to cover much but i don't think it was just that. It just didn't seem to have a wow factor.Maybe it'a too worn old tale.

Ouch. Someone is fed up of the Hac nostalgia and suggests looking at stuff that's going on in Manchester today. I kind of agree with him really. His word "Adidads" is funny. Dads who dress in Adidas?
