New Order's 1987 appearance makes no.18 in The Guardian's Glastonbury Headline Sets, ranked!

The photo is captioned as the 1987 set but it is NOT from that. Think that photo has been discussed on here before but nobody could pin down where and when the photo is from. Maybe Roskilde in the 80s or something?

Also it's stated the set was broadcast live on Radio 1 "in a portent of the wall-to-wall coverage the festival would eventually receive". Nope , it was NOT broadcast live. It was broadcast on Radio 1,yes, but not til around 4 months later.

Yours Sincerely,

A.Pedant

Barney looks impossibly thin in that photo. Between that and it appearing to be an early afternoon set, I'm guessing early eighties.

^ Yes.Thing is with that photo, that field does look a bit like Glastonbury Pyramid Stage. As i said , this photo has been mistaken elsewhere before for Glastonbury and discussed on here. But it isn't NO at the 1981 Glast because Bernard has different clothes on and it's early afternoon not evening. And definitely not 1987.

Looks European early/mid 80s to me as well. A lot of vans and mullets in the audience. Not sure it's Roskilde though.

Appears to be part of the interview NME conducted around the time of Suede's excellent Autofiction album last year, but this bit was recently uploaded. When discussing "firsts", Brett Anderson reveals his first concert was New Order:

Hooky and Graeme Park interviewed on Craig Charles 6Music show yesterday:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001n53p

Something Hooky mentions is that Martin Atkins was going to join Warsaw, but ended up joining Magazine instead.

I don't think I've ever heard this fact before and I'm sure I would've done.
More Hooky misremembering/BS possibly, or is there any fact to this?

Incidentally, after divulging this info, he responds to Craig's question as to whether Martin regretted his decision as 'he couldn't have turned into as much of a backstabber as Steve Morris' or words to that effect.
Never misses a trick to badmouth the band, eh...even when the question was completely unrelated.

Edit: I'm not even sure that Atkins ever joined Magazine, did he?
Think he might be thinking of Martin Jackson, who played with Magazine, The Chameleons, Durutti Column, The Freshies... and Swing Out Sister!
Still, I don't think I've ever heard of Jackson potentially joining Warsaw.

Confusion! Ra-Ta-Ta, Ti-Ti-Ti Ta-Ta Hey!

Atkins joined Public Image Ltd. in 1979, and was there off and on until 1985.

The drummer in Magazine was Martin Jackson.

Hook has a faulty memory, and wants to spit up little tidbits like they're facts.

Seriously, fuck him. What a sad, bitter old man he is. Gone from New Order for 16 years (!), and still letting them live rent-free in his head.

More PH nonsense. Martin Atkins played for PIL and was a pretty good drummer. Probably mixed up with MJ. JD/NO wouldn't have worked half as well without Steve M on drums and his slightly awkward personality. No disrespect, but The Light drummer, while technically proficient, doesn't have Steve's "jerky" moves, albeit probably as a result of testing high strength mindbending drugs in the late 70's.

To be honest, it gets harder and harder to do, with each passing snipe from Mr Hook.

I know that journalists often try and get a rise out of him, so I know him bringing them up in conversation is not always 100% his fault (although he could leave a ‘no comment’ statement).

But it’s the way that he finds a way to bad-mouth them from the most innocuous questions that annoys me.
I just want to hear an interview with him where I don’t end up rolling my eyes.

A truly nasty fellow. I mean, the way he goes on you'd think he'd been left penniless and homeless and would have a reason to be an unhinged, bitter old twat. But i'm sure he's got a few bob. And a wife and family. He was once an alcoholic , correct? From the alcoholics i've had the displeasure of knowing in my time he still has that thing they all seem to have of arrogantly expecting everyone else to bend to their opinion and whim, the world must revolve around them. Forever puzzles me how interviewers never say to him you're a bit of dick really aren't you , Hooky?

BBC 6 Music have a series of "Rave Forever" programmes/mixes available on BBC Sounds & website at the moment.

They got Mark Moore of S'Express to do a 30 minute 80s mix which starts with BLT and also has Klein & MBO's Dirty Talk.

Utah Saints deliver a 30 minute 90s Megamix. They've clearly put a lot of work into this; there are 34 tracks listed and that still doesn't cover them all - such as NO's Regret at about 17:56.

Yes i listened to both of those. Can't remember what day i listened to Mark Moore's but i caught Utah Saints' mix on catch up Friday evening after it had been on earlier as part of 6Music's 90s All Day Rave stuff. The Utah Saints' mix goes a bit mad for a few minutes half way through and it's like they tried to cram in tiny bits from a hundred different 90s hits. So there's a few seconds of Barney's guitar from the intro to Regret playing, bizzarely, over Return To Innocence by Enigma. As you do.

A great half hour mix though

Martin Fry on VirginRadio.co.uk regarding the strange power of "Blue Monday".

He can't put his finger on it either. It's common knowledge now that the track is a hodgepodge of ideas they ripped off from elsewhere, but its intangible magic is more than the sum of those parts.

At a glance there doesn’t look to be much in the way of unreleased tracks on the second disc. Best hope are those edits.

The CD re-release is timely as some versions have been expensive to acquire on the second hand market for a while.

Curiously the LP has been listed on Discogs since May, despite no official announcement until now. Chatted to the guy who logged it – got his hands on a production copy way early.

I will buy it but the song selection and tracklisting seems poorly conceived. I guess I can always burn my own.

Why not...

Disc one - Singles (and probably could have been*):

1. Getting Away with It
2. Get the Message (Single Remix)
3. Reality*
4. Tighten Up (Single Edit)
5. Feel Every Beat
6. Disappointed (Single Mix)
7. Forbidden City
8. For You
9. Second Nature
10. If You've Got Love*
11. Until the End of Time (Soulboy Collective 7" Version)
12. Vivid (Radio Edit)
13. When She's Gone*
14. Late at Night (Radio Edit)
15. Twisted Tenderness

Disc two - Best b-sides and remixes

[Open to debate, as remixes generally don't age as well]

1. Lucky Bag
2. Free Will [Extended version. For heaven's sake, do not edit down this glorious track]
3. Second to None
4. Idiot Country Two
5. Imitation of Life [only use New Edit if my vague calculations are off for these tracks to fit on a disc]
6. All that I Need
7. I Feel Alright
8. Radiation
9. Warning Sign
10. Getting Away with It (Extended Version)
11. Feel Every Beat (12" Remix)
12. Disappointed (Original Mix)
13. Until the End of Time (Fluffy Dice Remix)
14. Twisted Tenderness [Guitar Mix]
