New order nowhere to be seen in the top 30....it baffles me how they constantly seem to be overlooked

The Beatles
Queen
The Rolling Stones
Pink Floyd
Fleetwood Mac
Led Zeppelin
Take That
Coldplay
Oasis
Electric Light Orchestra
The Who
Depeche Mode
The Jam
Radiohead
The Smiths
Genesis
Pet Shop Boys
The Cure
Duran Duran
Madness
Girls Aloud
The Beautiful South
The Kinks
Bee Gees
Wham!
The Clash
Blur
Spice Girls
The Police
Manic Street Preachers

That's the list with beatles at 1 and manics at 30...wouldn't copy the numbers for some reason

Good to see bands like Coldplay and Take That being ranked so high though, eh?

And Wham! changed music immeasurably…

Ah, this was BBC Radio 2 listeners in particular, as per this BBC link.

Oh, and I've found a tweet:

Mind you, NO are in the "Radio 2 demographic" these days (age, eh?), and they appear to have been further down the list (position not given).
As per the BBC link.

Quote:
An additional show, Your Ultimate British Group: The Extras, is now available in the BBC Sounds collection, which will feature (in no particular order) the bands voted in chart position numbers 30-54.

Here's the show + tracklisting on BBC Sounds. And track 1 is...

The main Top 30 show (if anyone cares) is on BBC Sounds here.

I guess with the exception of a couple of "big" hits, NO have never really been mainstream. I've always considered them to be an indie band, so I would expect them to be on the kind of chart that includes Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine and Jesus & Mary Chain, for example. None of those artists are mentioned here.

Any chart that includes Take That, Girls Aloud and the Spice Girls needs a large pinch of salt. These aren't real bands; they're manufactured teen-sploitation bands, IMHO.

Yeah. You’re right about NO being an ‘indie’ band and not ‘pop’ per se.
But, still, The Smiths and The Cure are in the top 30 and rarely had massive ‘pop’ hits. Think they’re comparable.

Great Groucho quote, btw. And very applicable here.

I tend to think of them as indie too, even though that was never really a thing in the U.S. It's been nice to see their status elevated over the past decade to beloved legacy alternative band, and songs like Bizarre Love Triangle rightfully being reevaluated as classics.

They're in a very unique position in that they were two different highly influential bands. I wonder where they'd rank if votes for Joy Division and New Order were all grouped together?

I think of them as an alternative band myself..but they have very much crossed over into radio 2 territory (its on all day at work) with true faith, regret and blue monday (88 unfortunately) getting regular airings

I think the list to vote for had 52 bands on it...although the term band is applied pretty loosely to some on there

You could vote 5 times but all 5 could be for one artist...i did my bit anyway!
