Well i love Movement and the two songe Peter played at Buxton were damm ace sounding so thats ok by me.. PCL Great album , New order moving on and Bernard "discovering " his niche singing voice, can Hooky pull that one off,? well get me ticket and dance down the front. These are great songs and not to be consigned to the archives.
Leave me alone.

I've got my tickets too.
The way I see it, we've got two bands playing the music we want to hear and playing it well. I was dead against the whole Hooky plays Joy Division thing to begin with but, having seen them perform Still at The Factory this year, I've been converted. If they can give us powerful renditions of Movement and P,C&L then I'm all for it.
Whilst I'm a little dubious about the motives, I do believe that Hooky does genuinely love performing live... it's just a dreadful shame that he can't be doing it as part of New Order.

All joking aside, I wouldn't mind hearing Hooky & The Light having a go at the Electronic albums, as it's not like Bernard & Johnny are ever going to do it! The first Electronic album was really good & it would be really interesting to hear Hooky do songs like "Get The Message" & "Tighten Up" etc. Also, their 3rd album, "Twisted Tenderness" was less electronic & more guitar-based, so this would be right up Hooky's street. Not so sure about the Other Two albums though!... Will never happen though as that is wholly owned by Bernard and Johnny Marr

... when are the Republic shows pencilled in for? Seriously, I'm not taking the piss, it is a New Order album after all.
I have a hard time imagining The Light doing renditions of "World" or "Liar". Or maybe it'll just be the "classic" Factory era LPs?
Just genuinely wondering how playing all of New Order's albums is gonna work in practical terms. Surely he will take things one step at a time, maybe the January gigs are a way of testing the waters before taking that show on the road.. As for Republic, here is a quote by Hooky on the album itself which suggests it's pretty low on his list of priorities... Quote: Republic in particular was Bernard’s vision of what he wanted New Order to sound like. And the rest of us gave up, to be honest. That’s why Get Ready sounded more to me like a New Order record than Republic ever did.
Although I could imagine him doing Regret and Avalanche...

Quite honestly I don't understand why everyone's so up in arms about all this. Ever since the Light became a full-time project Hooky's publically toyed with the idea of doing all his albums and both Movement and Power Corruption and Lies have been specified. Movement should be fairly plain sailing as he sang a quarter of it first time round (including its only boner - tee hee - fide classic), they've already played some live this year and Bernard's vocals had yet to become inimitable. And yeah, PC&L/Temptation are potentially risky - maybe that's why they haven't announced a full tour? - but we said that about UP and I've yet to read a crap review. I'm sure musicians of this calibre wouldn't tackle an album of such status unless they knew they could do it justice. So yeah, I'm up for it. Come back to Rome, boys! PS Republic isn't QUITE as bizarre a prospect as it first appears. Remove Avalanche which is ultimately The Other Two and exactly half the songs were played on the '93 tour (Regret, RIAD, World, Ev Ev, Special). And while Hook's low is the final mix he probably had more to do with the pre-Hague versions, plus he spends most of the gigs singing rather than playing. In fact singing and playing bass around it may be paradoxically just right for him! PPS I fucking hate Republic, especially Liar. Edited by user 26 September 2012 05:55:46(UTC)

Thing is. PC&L, in particular, has some great tunes. Once you've heard Hooky sing them, you'll have that (sh1t) version in your head and you won't be able to get rid. So forever more, when you hear those songs, you'll have Hooky's voice competing with the original.
Not good. Best not to hear the cover versions in the first place.

I go to lots of gigs and the light is ALWAYS a great night out. I,ve got my tickets for manchester and I know hooky wil put his heart and soul into this. We,ve never had it so good in years with all this new order related activity. I like anyone else would sooner they were all friends but that is just not going to happen.

I can understand this point of view. This is what I said when I heard, for example, that George Michael was covering Toothache. I worked hard and am pleased to say that I have not heard it to this day. If years as music fans have taught us anything it's not to concentrate on the worst aspects of a performance. The vocals at a Light gig are like the harmonica at the end of Idiot Wind or the fact that Kelly Brook can't cook; not really what you should be concentrating on. They're not the point. Hooky makes one of the best sounds in rock and roll and he'll be doing it over some of his songs. I'll go and see that. |

I've booked a couple of tickets for the London show as working in the smoke at the moment. Looking forward to DNE and Doubts to be honest. I can see Hooky doing a pretty decent Denial too.

Never had such a problem fortunately! Movement and the early early songs I understand, Barney's as well as disowned them anyway - and it would be a pity if noone played them ever again. DNE especially. PCL just doesn't make sense really - it's not like NO aren't playing songs off it, as well as BM and Temptation. But hey, we're grown ups, make our choices etc etc.

Just ordered by ticket for the Cathedral. My only chance to see Movement/PCL songs being played live. Can't see New Order doing them...
It will be interesting to hear his take on AoC. Hope he plays it faster like in the 80s. |

This is fun!
We are getting best of both worlds here and we can fill our diaries watching both! I remember the wilderness years where everyone was desperate for new order shows but they played so infrequently it was a pain
Just suck it up and enjoy the ride.

I still think this is a bad idea. If Hooky ever wants to reconcile with Barney this is the directly opposite way to do it.
Saying that though, The Light's instrumentation has been heavenly - it's just a shame that Hooky's vocals will spoil it ALTHOUGH Rowetta would be even worse - She has a great voice, but it's waaaaay toooo operatic for New Order.
The ideal vocalist would be a geezer called Bernard Sumner - If they got him to join the group, then WOW that would be something. |
