Sure, that would be irritating and maybe hurtful for Hooky to see this, but if his behaviour really has been like this the whole time (ie his behaviour within the band and how he now comes across in the press since he left), I can understand someone feeling liberated by not working with someone like that!
Alternatively, Barney might be a right mare to work with? And Hooky was the only other member of the band who challenged that?
Bottom line is probably that Barney and Hooky just rubbed each other up the wrong way (not the fault of either party, it's just one of those things in life). Stephen (and Gillian) needed a good think about which way they were gonna side, and decided to go with Barney as that seemed the more obvious choice what with him being the lead singer. Perfectly sensible business decision from the Other Two. Little more than that.
Anyway, on to another point, why is everyone here so suddenly concerned with Barney's
happiness? It amazes me, how many times this has come up, people posting gig reports basically saying, "Well, at least the band look happy now." I don't really give a shit if Barney's happy or not. What's it got to do with me? Or indeed, anyone else? If I'd seen New Order as a youngster and Barney was some happy-clappy dick, and there was no edge to the music whatsoever, no air of indifference, or indeed menace, then I doubt I'd have become such a fan. It was the group's dynamic (good or bad) which got me onboard in the first instance.
