I remember reading somewhere last year that NO were doing a charity show for a sick friend. Then, that rumors of a hook-less reunion tour were really the plans all along.
Last nights Los Angeles show was great. I especially liked the way they reworked and remixed their music but before u know it the concert was over. My wife knew 90% of the songs with the exception of elegia and isolation, but something she said on the way home got me thinking.
I asked her if she liked the show and she said,"I enjoyed the show but it was really short. Sounds like they booked the place for the shortest time to make an even bigger profit at the expense of the fans."
So i started thinking and I noticed Bernard wasn't really himself. I know he's gotten older and can't dance like he use to during the technique and republic tour but he didn't even introduce the band. It was more like, let's get this over with so we can go home. I mean Gillian was there, not even a mention of her although she looked great.
I believe the concert started at about 9pm and ended at 1015pm. Is it just me or is that a short set for a set that wasn't even a festival?
I know they tour to make money but were the rumors true that they only toured cause they're Broke?
Thanks

That's not 'short' by New Order standards.
That's pretty much all they play for. Looking at the setlist you basically got the generic 'New Order by Numbers' set - Elegia opener, rock out for a bit, slower middle section, longer dancier numbers, and then the Joy Division encore.
You certainly didn't get longer sets during Technique or Republic.

That's a lot of rumours that I've never heard before. Skint? Good dancing?
I can't recall Barney introducing the band. You sure you're not thinking about Van Morrison?
1hr 15 sounds a little light, but not much. How long were you expecting?
Generally, what were your expectations based on?
Did you miss Hooky? |

There's a curfew for Greek. Did you see those million dollar homes on your way down? Yep. You should have seen how they rushed through Coachella with just 8 or 10 songs in 2005. Before I knew it, NIN fans swamped the front of the stage. I thought the number of songs were the same as Oakland. I was a tad bit disappointed that they didn't play any songs from Republic, Technique, WFTSC. But still good. IMO, new order really made an effort. The backdrop videos were amazing and the songs were tight. Tom isn't Hooky but hey, he does a decent job. I had the chance of meeting the band prior the the concert and they were really pumped up for LA. Edited by user 08 October 2012 07:48:47(UTC)

Nope. Didn't miss hooky at all. I was 17 when I saw them at the universal amphitheater in l.a. and don't remember walking away with this same feeling of a short concert but I do remember him introducing the band. Like one of the commenters posted, might have been due to the noise curfew. Thanks for the replies. Oh yeah, I never said summer was a good dancer. I meant his signature arm moving, finger pointing, crouching moves he had. Edited by user 08 October 2012 08:05:58(UTC)

Yeah, that definitely was not a short set. And Vince is right... There is a curfew at the Greek.

The curfew got me thinking of a similar situation with Laguna Seca racetrack in Nor cal. The million dollar homes nearby petitioned to have a sound limit for the race cars at the racetrack, knowing well that they choose to live near a racetrack. Racers have done everything to get below the limit and these homes have a sound meter installed. If that sound meter goes off, they will call the cops. I am not joking.
Gotta love Calif. :P

75 minutes? There were days when you were lucky to have a show longer than 50 minutes

Curfew wasn't the issue... they still had 40 minutes to curfew... not to mention they started 20 minutes late... it didn't seem short at all, but did wish it was longer... who wnats such a great concert over quickly.
And as for Barney only doing the concert for cash, he was out front signing autographs and taking pictures with people at 6:00, two and a half hours before they were to go on... granted most people walked 20 feet from him and didn't even notice he was there as it was an odd corner of a service entrance driveway he was standing (and the security was a 40 year old woman, which doesn't raise much interest). Considering I showed up when he said "no more"; I kinda snuck behind him to have a proximity picture with him... he stopped, looked slightly agitated, but quickly sounded chipper and said, "OK, one more"... that doesn't sound like someone only trying to punch a time card...
(A quick thanks to teh parking attendant that let us know "a band member" was across the street... tried to go back and thank you, but alas you were gone... if you happen to read this site, I'm in debt)

68 is right. The curfew is 11pm. Regardless, it was a good show.

"I enjoyed the show but it was really short. Sounds like they booked the place for the shortest time to make an even bigger profit at the expense of the fans."
I went to the Oakland show and felt like it was short too, but I think it's because they have such a long catalog of amazing songs that everyone wants to hear that it's hard not to want it to be a longer show. I think 16 songs is a decent set, although I would have been much happier to hear at least two more songs.
In terms of whether they are touring to make money, I thought about this a few weeks ago. If they wanted to go for a money grab, I think NO would have played a bigger venue for their opening show in Oakland. They also only charged $45 balcony, $55 floor for the Oakland show (not sure how much it was at the Greek) and immediately, tickets were selling in secondary markets for $150-200 for floor tickets. They could have easily charged just under $100 for floor and it would have still sold out. (In fact, if you looked at Craigslist the day of the show, you'd see a lot of posts from buyers asking for tickets at $100.)
I also think coming all the way to America, they would have done more than a handful of shows. This tour really seems more like the band having fun and wanting to play all over the world with the current line up. I think to make a lot of money with the smallest amount of effort, we wouldn't get these shows at all. They'd just book the summer festival circuit.

Yeah they are notorious for doing short sets and not doing encores. B even joked about it when he said he that's all I've got I'm done and goodnight. Then jokingly said something about their rep for short sets. I read somewhere that some of their shows in the past were as short as 45min.
For me it was great, but I would have happily paid triple the ticket cost to see NO play a full show with no opener. I did like Run Run Run. Just wish there was more NO.

If you think LA was short at 75 mins, you should have been at Margate. Or Edinburgh Playhouse. They were short. |

I'm totally fine with a 45 minute set, especially for a GA show. Gramma needs her chair eventually.
