sad but no surprise. HMV business model wasnt in touch with the times. prices were more than amazon. everyone downloads albums or rents dvds. dont they?

i am not sad. they ruined record buying in this town, the wankers. drove the local independent shop out of business, never had owt i wanted, terrible customer service, often more expensive than their own website.

(i've already bleated about all of this elsewhere. there's a comparison to be drawn - facebook has nicked all the custom from the little niche forums, with its all-encompassing homogenised shiny sell. big blue corporate bastard.)

Mixed feelings.Used to shop at HMV in Coventry and/or Birmingham a lot in the 80s but the last time i was in one looking at vinyl the price of a vinyl album was about £28! and it wasn't even a special or limited edition. No idea where they dreamt up the idea of pricing that much for a standard edition. The above mentioned Our Price killed all the independent records shops in this town back in the 90s.

It says in that article HMV should have started trading online 10 years ago.Erm, it was trading online then, i used to buy stuff from HMV online way back in about 2000.

Think i stopped visiting the high street HMV stores years ago because i got fed up with the barrage of Video Games and consoles for sale in my face soon as i walked in the door. They became more obsessed with the games and DVD market and neglected the music.

Some in Liverpool recently were over £40!

HMV has failed because it failed to accurately educate its customers from 2001 onwards why so many of their best-ofs and classic CD albums were such ridiculously good value. Mind you, the latest Yazoo 2CD (£3.75 after the blue cross sale) compilation - failing to include the full, original 12" tracks of Don't Go - goes to show that HMV are by no means the only ones who need to get their acts together...

I will visit HMV in Birmingham tomorrow ( Saturday) while it's still there to have one last cd and vinyl browsing indulgence ( if i can suffer the annoying banks of video games and crap) and remember the old days. The only record shop left in Birmingham city centre after it's gone will be the independent shop Swordfish Records which i'll also visit. That shop may actually enjoy a big rise in trade if HMV closes so every cloud has a silver lining eh? It nearly closed a while back i think.

I head in to town on most Saturdays and HMV used to be one of the first shops I would check out, now that I think of it they gave over way too much space in particular to dvds, in a shop covering two floors the ground floor was a mix of cds, dvds and books etc. but the first floor was entirely devoted to dvds..

Whereas the UK shops have gone in to administration, the Irish ones have closed outright until further notice with receivers appointed, 20 full time and part time staff in Cork alone have lost their jobs.

i don't think i've ever seen vinyl in an hmv.

i suppose i will slightly miss their ubiquitous 3 for £10 dvd sales. and the smell of floor-cleaning fluid at the close of play on saturday. and their cheap in-ear headphones. and the blank cds. but that's it.

Well i mean in the 80s before CDs it was all vinyl but yeah in more recent times it was rare to see vinyl. HMV in Birmingham today had a small, pitiful vinyl section , mostly consisting of Beatles albums at £20 a shot or Peter Gabriel vinyl box sets at £100. The two HMV stores i knew in Brum have now closed and it's just the one store, now in the Bullring. Pretty small with just one floor. Only about a quarter (if that) of it is music, the rest is all the DVDs, video games and electronic gadgets crap.Bought the 2 XX albums ( their first one and the recent one) on CD for £10 the lot, which i can't complain about. Not a massive fan but i quite like them, i had to buy something and they were the only band i felt like shelling out on today. The choice in there wasn't vast to say the least. The shop was busy, loads browsing and a fairly big queue at the till.

Visited the independent shop, Swordfish, which has gone right downhill by the looks of things. It's all boxes of 7" singles for £1 or whatever but it's all crap like 80s Shakin Stevens, King (ugh, remember them?) and Elaine Page dross or second hand 70s prog rock.

So that's it, it's online for buying Vinyl and CDs from now on.End of an era.

i feel pretty mean now. 25% off loads of stuff in our hmv today (as with all of them, i expect) - i felt a bit vulturey and realised i WILL be sorry to see it go. and i feel bad for the staff. and their multiple piercings.

three colours trilogy still full price though. tight twats.
