Now this is interesting... Who WAS Gerry & the Holograms? Did they know him? This sounds like a lot of early live New Order. Did this guy work with New Order in the early 80s? Did this song inspire New Order?

Looking online, "they" had two 7" singles... but this is basically the only song. One 7" was a joke vinyl that was glued to sleeve apparently, so it was unplayable.

This video has references to The Residents, Andy Kaufman, Elvis, and Frank Zappa.

Thanks again wrote:
So the bass drum stutter/machine gun effect on BM possibly came from the Donna Summer song? They'd previously always claimed it came about from incorrectly programming their new drum machine

The story was that an error was made in triggering the sequencer. The intention was for it to come in from the beginning, not after a kick-drum only intro. It was a happy accident that ended up highlighting the distinctive drum pattern. If anything, the kick-drum echo on the Donna Summer track was more similar to the effect used on "The Beach".

In an interview in GQ, Bernard also mentions The Desert Place by german band The Twins as an influence for BM. I can hear it. Especially the intro and the sequencer. Great song, great video.

why didn't they just drag giorgio morodor into britannia row studios instead of trying to recreate all this stuff by hand?

gerry and the holograms was mostly CP Lee, former member of 70's mancunian comedy-rock band Alberto y Lost Trios Paranoias, and latter-day "cultural commentator". on drums in Albertos was Bruce Mitchell, of Durutti Column

Maybe they couldn't afford to hire him at that time.

BM was released 07/03/83. I thought about starting a new thread entitled "Happy 30th, Blue Monday" but I thought that might be a bit corny. So this'll have to do...

It's still corny.

To mark the anniversary, the New Order Facebook site put up a YouTube link to Blue Monday.

In case you haven't heard it.

Does anyone know why the 83 vid never got an official release? Fuck it, they've had enough chances - Substance 89, NOStory, Best Of '94, Item...

Some of these "facts" are questionable, specially 1 (the band never confirmed that the song is about the day after Curtis' death), 6 (the band produced themselves), 8 (nobody knows for sure how many copies were sold) and 9 (it's part of the factory records myth, but it's not true).
