Hmm, not for me I'm afraid: I'm not a fan of James Blake and listening to that, beyond the lyrics I can't hear much there that would make one of his fans decide they must investigate further and buy loads of Joy Division material (and maybe even New Order after that), He's basically wiped any resemblance of the original music and done a basic sort of plink plonk backing track and dumped his 'soulful' vocals on top (the 'people like you' bit is laughable): I'll file this along with Paul Youngs version of LWTUA and George Michaels TF (ie in the bin)

It’s not for me either.
But nothing, nothing is in the same league as Young’s cover of LWTUA. It’s so terrible, it’s almost brilliant. Sunshine and daisies.
Every time I hear it, I end up pissing myself laughing.
How can one artist just so completely ‘miss’ the message of a song?

The Last opportunity I had to see New Order live was at the Music Tastes Good festival in Long Beach, CA (a combination music and food fest). New Order headlined the first night, James Blake the second. The primary reason I attended the 2nd night was for The Church, but hung around to check out Blake as I was surprised that he was a headliner. His set was so tedious, I left after 3 tracks. I actually found the co-headliner, Janelle Monae, at the opposite end of the park, far more talented and compelling.

Oh, I’ve only just realised it’s James Blake not James Blunt.I had James Blunt in my head after listening to it. I don’t know, what’s the difference between James Blake and James Blunt? Sound the same to me.

I was very disappointed when Marty Wilson-Piper left, the first Church LP without him was hit and miss. But their latest album, Man Woman Life Death Infinity (back in 2017, wow!) is their best in decades. Check out Another Century, For King Knife, Undersea, Something Out There is Wrong...great stuff. Their set at that 2018 festival I mentioned was mostly the 1988 Starfish LP, for its 30th anniversary.

I think James Blake would generally be seen to be more credible than Blunt. I wonder how many people on the forum like any cover of a JD/NO track as much the original. I don't care whether or not this cover gets people into JD. I think it's alright. Then again I quite like Nezzer's version of Disorder. Which will hopefully annoy one or two people reading this.

That version of Disorder isn't bad. The Blake cover is no disgrace but it adds nothing to the song, when his voice goes up an octave I just have to turn it off, it's bearable up to that point. It just struck me (like a bolt from the blue) that it would be amazing to hear Liz Fraser cover a Joy Division song, perhaps The Eternal or Atmosphere.

My first reaction to that idea was nah, Liz wouldn’t suit singing a conventional lyric but then, duh, I forgot of course she did the incredible and magical cover of Song To The Siren. Also on This Mortal Coil’s first album she sang a cover of Roy Harper’s song Another Day.

Think this was done with Finitribe and PH later said he regretted it. Also Haig could possibly be responsible for for influencing the Sumner 80s haircut (Sandys in Edinburgh!) as I know they worked together with Bemusic. Any barbers on the forum with a photographic memory?

If I had one criticism though, is that it doesn’t stray too far from the original. I always feel with covers that I would prefer them to be different, but still capture the essence of the song in question. When you have a cover that’s so close to the original, I always find myself asking ‘why am I listening to this, when I could be listening to the original?’ But that’s a minor ‘personal’ gripe. The cover in question sounds pretty great. I also loved the visuals. Not sure if they are the band’s or something they appropriated from elsewhere, but they suited the song and were slightly unsettling (in a good way).
