After my rather harsh words yesterday, I’d like to elaborate further – it’s obvious they really put much effort in it, the playfulness on the arrangement of the synth strings is amazing, I know no other band that is capable of doing that in such a subtle, but emotionally rich way.
The song in itself, the chord structure, could also be a killer, but the sounds used are quite a letdown: the Moroder-theme as a reference has been done to death in the last 20 years in Techno/House/Synthpop, and used as directly as in „Plastic“, is bland and boring by now. You could easily alter this pattern with more diverse sounds and mixing up the rhythm structure – this is the second weak point, the drum programming/playing is standard 90ies-dance-fodder, why didn’t they make it more contemporary either by getting more minimal or at least a bit wonky, using more interesting sounds? Pet Shop Boys showed how to do it right on their last album.
Finally the bass guitar-solo is kind of a joke, sounding dilettante and badly produced. After hearing what Peter Hook has played on other dance tracks like „Guilt“, „Round & Round“ or even „Jetstream“, this part from Tom is disappointing. But maybe that's the point in combination with the lyrics, a parody on the Hookster.
And yes, "Restless" is really great! Love it now after instantly liking it from first listen.
