Yeah that's what i thought about Bernard's vocal; breathy, slightly restrained (maybe even a bit low in the mix?) and sensual.Takes the nastiness of the lyric off a bit.

But , erm, it's not Elly Jackson (La Roux) on the backing vocals i don't think..is it? A couple of posters have said that now.It doesn't sound anything like her if it is.

I could be wrong, but haven't several interviews and reviews with the band mentioned that Plastic is one of the songs Elly does vocals on? I could be wrong! Sure sounds like her.

Looks like you are indeed correct and i'm mistaken.Apoligies.Guardian feature from 7th July here

"...Jackson, who has previously toured with the group, provides backing vocals on Plastic, Tutti Frutti and People On The High Line."

I really didn't think it sounded like Elly Jackson but it seems it is! It was just i found the backing vocal sounds just generic backing vocalist rather than Elly.

I really like this one. First time hearing it ever today. They really did good with this one.

Does anyone know if this is a Stuart Price or Tom Rowlands production?

For quite a high energy dance track I like it. Obvious Donna summer or should that be Sumner, reference, but I like the breakdown that's goes a bit Basic Channel techno (ish).the female vocal not to over powering. Looking good for the new album.maybe best full on dance track since HTS. Should be good live especially at the Warehouse project on the Saturday night, looking forward to that one

Richard X involved: BlackMelody

I think it is La Roux. Hope the person I'm thinking of shows up on another track…

So she is on it!

For what it's worth, I think that it's both La Roux and DJ on backing vocals on this one, layered together. Hope DJ is on a few other tracks and given a bit more room.

Bloody hell, that is one catchy tune.

I must've listened to is over a dozen times, only switching to the impressive RAC mix of Restless a couple of times when Youtube suggested it.

I'm not hoping for Technique Part2 but it looks like Music Complete could well be the closest thing to that slice of sonic perfection (since Acolyte.)

Its OK - but Out Of Control did the same thing 100 times better and that was 17 years ago - it sounds more like a Technique B-side than anything to get excited about after all these years. If this and Restless are the first two things they've chosen to release, I'm beginning to think Music Complete might not be that great after all, regardless of what the press have said so far.

It's DJ and Dawn Zee layered up together to make the backing vocals… apparently.

"Plastic" really got me. The female voice is unnecessary, but not a great scratch in the song. I heard it with a headphone and sounds fantastic. A song that grows up.

Really enjoy "Plastic". It's not BLT but it's easily the best dance record New Order have put out since... the first Electronic record.

Speaking of which, that record too featured a diva yelling all over the top of its most famous single. I'll tell you, every time I read "unnecessary vocal" you can really tell which fans came into New Order through dance music and which ones came in through The Cure. :)

Agree that "Restless" is a grower. Initially it sounded like total dad rock but the lead into the choruses is sublime.

After my rather harsh words yesterday, I’d like to elaborate further – it’s obvious they really put much effort in it, the playfulness on the arrangement of the synth strings is amazing, I know no other band that is capable of doing that in such a subtle, but emotionally rich way.
The song in itself, the chord structure, could also be a killer, but the sounds used are quite a letdown: the Moroder-theme as a reference has been done to death in the last 20 years in Techno/House/Synthpop, and used as directly as in „Plastic“, is bland and boring by now. You could easily alter this pattern with more diverse sounds and mixing up the rhythm structure – this is the second weak point, the drum programming/playing is standard 90ies-dance-fodder, why didn’t they make it more contemporary either by getting more minimal or at least a bit wonky, using more interesting sounds? Pet Shop Boys showed how to do it right on their last album.
Finally the bass guitar-solo is kind of a joke, sounding dilettante and badly produced. After hearing what Peter Hook has played on other dance tracks like „Guilt“, „Round & Round“ or even „Jetstream“, this part from Tom is disappointing. But maybe that's the point in combination with the lyrics, a parody on the Hookster.

And yes, "Restless" is really great! Love it now after instantly liking it from first listen.

I like it. It's more immediate than Restless which has almost universally been accepted as "a bit of a grower" but I reckon Plastic is a bit of a grower in it's own way. When I first heard Restless I didn't dislike it but like many just wasn't sure it was the Regret/Crystal-like behemoth required for a first single. Fast forward a couple of months I can't get the bloody chorus out of my head and the instrumentation fits together perfectly. Plastic's vastly different electro sound would not have been that out of place on the last Pet Shop Boys album 'Electric' which I personally really enjoyed. The hand/influence of Stuart Price is clear (although he's not producing?) is as is Richard X's involvement in the mixing.

It's clearly undergone a big revamp since the live versions... the one I (vaguely) remember in San Francisco seemed different but I can't say I'm not impressed by the final mix. Must admit, 10 out of 10 to Mute for how they've handled the release of the new material so far; they seem to have a solid attention to detail which Warners really lacked in the final years. Really looking forward to receiving the physical product(s).

I like how it's completely different from Restless in that it is structured wholly around the synths. In many ways, it reminds me of Axis from the last PSB album, bit of a thumper and clearly designed for the dance floor. I quite like the outro, and the long intro into the vocals. Barney's vocals are good and the lyrics were not as cringeworthy as other songs of recent vintage. On a whole, I give it solid to strong like. I like that they are trying to show people with these first two tracks that there is a bit of diversity with this record.

If you wanted to be really critical of Plastic you could (as many have) say it's very like something Pet Shop Boys would have knocked up with a not very compelling melody or lyric and a slightly tired Moroder feel. It's very slick and flash and boasts exquisite production but fans of ultra cutting edge electronic/dance music probably wouldn't give it a second listen. But it is what it is and does what the band set out to do with it i think. It's a good, fun listen despite all that and plays its part in the album as a whole (i'm guessing) .As long as there are a few songs with a more human or poignant lyric and tune on the album i'll take Plastic for the slick and flash track that it is.
