Speaking of such matters.. I wonder will "The Sky At Night" be back on TV this year, it was I think being presented by Chris Lintott anyway so maybe it will, I used to really enjoy that when I was going through my astronomy phase...

i went to a bbc stargazing live event tonight, and can categorically confirm scientists ARE sexy. as is space. as is profbriancox. (i'm back on him.)

we spent ages attaching post-its to the 'what song would you play to the universe?' display. (my top choice: monochrome by the sundays. lots of votes for bowie/the beatles/the carpenters. NO votes for fucking will.i.am. as if you send music to mars and it's not pump up the volume. )

I saw a little of the Star Gazing event this week and as we were watching it I posed the question to my girlfriend, who do you prefer? Chris Lintott or Brian Cox,
she went for the former...

They were discussing meteorites and I was reminded of the fact that I actually have one at home..
I found it when I was in my early teens, maybe I should have it authenticated but the slim chance that the experts would say "that's no meteorite" has always put me off the idea...

i have seen loose used instead of lose by people who should know better. 'definately' is also a regular offender. these things do not bother me. what does bother me is invite (verb) being used instead of invitation (noun). i used to complain. but mine was a small plaintive voice in the darkness. the battle has been lost.

No one cares about spelling anymore - they have Spellcheck on their emails and Word documents, or they deliberately misspell in texts. I'm guilty of this myself. In fact i was told off recently for typing loose in a text message. Silly of me, as the idea is to shorten words in text messages rather than elongate them. Nonetheless my defence was something like this:
Pronounce these words:
Bose
Hose
Nose
Pose
Rose
Now pronounce Lose.

Pronounce these words:
Choose
Snooze
Zoos
Boos
Igloos
Poos (probably appropriate for this post)

So going by the above examples lose should really be spelt loose.
People may argue that loose is of course a completely different word, with another meaning. But sometimes a word can be spelt the same way and have two different meanings. Eg: Wind (moving air) or wind (to wind your watch). So why not have the 'loose' spelling covering lose and loose? (Rhetorical question; please don't answer with: "because that's not what's in the dictionary").

There's sort of a flaw in my 'wind' example but I'm not going to point it out...

Anyway that's my defence for misspelling lose. I'm not sure if this post counts as anally retentive but um, I feel a bit weird now...

A friend recently gained a qualification in English teaching as he would like to get work teaching English abroad when he's travelling. However his English spelling, grammar and punctuation ( my punctuation and grammar aren't always the greatest but i'd say they're better than his) whenever he emails me and others is awful. I don't know if he just can't be bothered when it comes to writing English or what.

english is a notoriously confusing, difficult, anarchic language. good, that's what i say.
