David Bowie's comeback album 'The Next Day' is the early favourite to win this year's Mercury Music Prize.

The album, released in March, is Bowie's first since 'Reality' in 2003 and has been met with critical acclaim. Leading bookmaker Paddy Power has slashed the odds on the album winning the prestigious prize, not awarded until September, from 12/1 to just 7/2 following a spate of recent bets. 'The Next Day' is ahead of its nearest rival, Foals third album 'Holy Fire' which currently has odds of 14/1.

That's a surprise. I think the list gets shortened to 12 eventually. I'll be even more surprised if they make it on to that. And then don't most of the acts perform something from the album as part of the ceremony? As Hooky is no longer involved, that would be kinda weird (mind you i think that happened with Arctic Monkeys). And the final shortlisted acts each get a little trophy. Hooky would have to get a chunk carved off the thing wouldn't he? It tends not to be human shaped which rules out Hooky getting the um, right arm i suppose...

An album that's not even been released yet is nominated?

these aren't actual nominations though, are they? just the odds being offered by bookmakers on 2013 releases.

The title is misleading though...those are guesses for who might be nominated...not who's actually nominated for it.

Lost Siren's will not be nominated. Makes no sense. I think Bowie could get nominated though; his new album is a great and not something you'd expect from someone at such a 'mature' period in his career.

P.S. Reality by Bowie, his previous album, is also excelent.
