Another UK tour? And possibly Glastonbury Other Stage

"What are the plans for next year?

Tom: We’re having such a laugh that we just want to carry on playing shows, really. That’s what you’ve got to remember – Bernard, Gillian and Steve could retire tomorrow if they want, but New Order are going on because it’s fun. So we’re sorting out festivals at the moment, and we’ll fit in a UK tour in between.

Phil: We won’t do anything unless we enjoy it.

Speaking of festivals, is it true you might be headlining the Other Stage at Glastonbury?

Phil: Glastonbury is a possibility, but we’re not allowed to tell anyone anything anymore.

Tom: So far as I’m aware, nothing is confirmed."

This bit was of particular interest to me:

Loaded: Speaking of songs you don’t play anymore, then… Why nothing from Technique at the shows, the electronic album that feels the most similar to Music: Complete?

Phil: Ha! I must admit, that surprises me too. You’d have to ask Bernard why he refuses to play anything from Technique. I’d sign a petition to reintroduce songs from that album in the shows.

I still believe the sensitive subject matter of much of Technique's lyrics (Bernard's divorce) are the primary reason for him shying away from those tracks. I certainly don't believe the "they're in the wrong key" or "too difficult to program" theories.

They played Round & Round in Boston in 2013 -- I think the only time they've done a technique tune in a good while -- and the crowd went wild, really turned iwhat was alrfeady a great crowd up a notch

They also played Round & Round in Ibiza (Ibiza Rocks) I seem to recall? And, from memory, they've played Run at some point since 2011, haven't they?

(I may have been too pissed and can't remember)! Big Grin

Cool

Knew they'd played Run Wild a few times, but I could have sworn that they've played another Technique track (other than Round & Round) since 2011? Looking at setlist.fm, it definitely wasn't Run - that was last played in 1998...

I must be confusing it with something else... The only other songs from that "era" that I can definitely remember being played since 2011 are 1963 and Touched By The Hand Of God...

Without looking it up i'll hazard a guess the last outing for Run was the Manchester Apollo gig in July 1998?

They did, slightly surprisingly, dig up and play World (Price Of Love) a few times around 2012-2013 though that of course is from Republic not Technique.

There were also a couple of half-hearted attempts at Guilty Partner 1998, which was surprising at the time as it's (and probably Love Less) lyrics are the most candid. I imagine Dream Attack and Fine Time lived on the longest after 1989 because their different lyrical themes. Round & Round is somewhat more vague, but was the most popular single.

I believe Mr. Disco, Vanishing Point and Dream Attack deserve to resurrected. Fine Time always seemed to go down well live but I don't miss it as much.

Yeah they did Guilty Partner at the Christmas and New Year's eve gigs in 1998, Manchester Evening News Arena 29/12/98 and Alexandra Palace , London NYE 1998.I was at the Manchester gig - they had to restart Guilty Partner as they messed up the beginning.

Dream Attack is inspiring and uplifting as are most of the lyrics in it and on first thoughts you could imagine it in the set these days but then you have a line like "I can't see the sense in you leaving/All i need is your love to believe in/For you i'll do what i can/ But i can't change the way that i am" which, again, could well be about Bernard's previous marriage but who knows. Can't imagine Bernard wanting to do something like Vanishing Point if it is indeed about his previous marriage (again, we don't know really) and has lines like "I've seen all the hate of a woman too". Fine Time wasn't among my favourite songs on Technique but it did work bloody well live, much better than the recorded version.Run was always a bit shit live IMHO and even Bernard has said that about the song himself.Maybe they should try and revive All The Way.It's a cracking little song with optimistic lyrics yet one that often gets overlooked when Technique is talked about, it always seems to be all about Fine Time, Round & Round, Run, Vanishing Point, Mr Disco and Dream Attack.

To be honest, Hook has half a point about the set list repetition. We don't really need to to hear BLT and Temptation etc, every time. They don't play a lot of stuff off many albums, not just Technique. I'd love to hear more Republic tracks other than Regret, which was an album noted for less bass, so you would have thought some of those tracks would be ideal...

Trouble these days is that they have videos on the backdrop screen for every song - seems like they only do songs now that they have videos created for. They couldn't suddenly decide one day oh let's do Dream Attack because they'd have to also create a video for it, though how long would that actually take to knock up? The images on the screen for something like, say, Ceremony is just a load of swirling smoke-like images. And anyway they've got the setlist down pat now, they've perfected to within an inch of its life the way the set starts, ebbs and flows and then builds to a crescendo at the end.Like someone said on here somewhere or elsewhere it's almost like a DJ set - that thing of knowing how to pace the set and then building to have the big finish. They just aren't going to faff around with changing the set like in the old days.

Could have sworn that they played Round and Round at the Brum Ballroom in 2012. Checking the setlist from then also says that they did. I remember the intro more than anything else.

Yep they did at that gig.I remember the intro for the fact i didn't immediately recognise it as Round & Round at first- can't remember exactly what they did but the intro was unrecognisable to me, it was only when it got a little further in i realised it was R&R.
