this is probably the worst possible fan DIY project that i could have thought of,

but i figured i would chronicle my misadventures here, for the rest of you to
poke fun at.

===================================
it all started with the cassette canvas boxes that were limited editions.

most of them have started fading and have tons of issues.

here's my pictures of what condition mine are in, not pretty.

so i was wondering if there was a way to restore them.

and then went down a rabbit hole.

first up, text transfer to canvas.

ok, just to cut to the chase.

ultimately, i ended up buying some canvas inkjet paper, and just printing straight on the canvas.

https://www.amazon.com/g...04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

that i found out about a week after messing around.

UserPostedImage
UserPostedImage

but at first i looked onto youtube, and found tons of videos showing transfers, where you used liquitex, or mod podge or
some other chemical, and then print a transfer onto paper with a laserjet. inkjet didn't work.

something like this:

i could never get it to work, i tried several different ways.

ok, here's the latest status:

here's a reference, with a cardsleeve CD, a jewel box, an opened 5x7 canvas
dual hinged rio box, original substance box, dual hinged technique
UserPostedImage

here are 3 boxes as a reference
UserPostedImage

here is a closeup of the cassette box, the hinges, and brass clasp
UserPostedImage
UserPostedImage
UserPostedImage

here is the finished product.
UserPostedImage
UserPostedImage
UserPostedImage

you will need:

cassette box with tape
canvas sheets printable by inkjet (haven't tried laserjet)
brass screws and hinges
brass clasp and screws
photographic paper and images to print out
inkjet printer
screwdriver to put in screws, and remove staples from wood frame holding in canvas
2 - 5x7 inch canvas, with enough space for the cassette
staple gun, or stapler to reattach canvas
scissors
pencil or pen

1 remove staples holding in canvas from wood with screwdriver
2 print out text onto new canvas sheet. i had to use the back, because it was whiter, than the cream color on front.
3 trace old canvas over new one
4 cut out shape from the new canvas
5 place canvas on wood frame, and reattach it with staples
6 place hinges on one side, and screw back in dont attach all
7 see where screw holes will be on the other half, and then attach, and tighten all screws
8 see where the clasp will go, and attach clasp
9 print out images to photographic paper
10 insert cassette tape and case

i will probably put the images in an envelope

here are a combination of sticker, and vellum printing for sleeves.

had to fix the 20 years of cover, since they were out of order.

sticker printing with text on top, vellum printing with color underneath:

Redbubble too

I remember when all the unofficial designs on Redbubble looked very amateur, but these days they don't.

True Faith

Technique

PCL

I guess the answer is that these things are made individually to order. There's probably no stock to "seize" at any given point in time.

EDIT: also you may notice you can get the designs on "90+ other items" including phone cases, duvet covers, mini skirts, clocks, socks, masks, shower curtains...

good point, yes, they are made to order.

the quality seems quite nice on a lot of them too.

i guess, if i ever sold anything, i wouldn't have to worry too much either then.

It's up to the copyright holder to request a take-down.

Factory no longer exists. Who holds the rights? London/Warners? Peter Saville? Some of his designs have become so ubiquitous it simply wouldn't be possible to track down every instance of copyright infringement. Plus, it costs money to do that. You'd have to weight the expense of disputing copyright against the small amount of money these things probably make.

actually, whoever owns it, has been pretty busy, with all the new additions to the store,
and also the NOAH clothing and merchandising releases.

so someone has the licenses for them, and people are requesting them.

thank you,

i was using frames with glass at first, and was very scared of them falling down and breaking.
also, i was using velcro only, and didn't want to use nails, because there would be a lot of
holes in the walls.

i have had several large ones fall down and shatter.

now these are smaller, and i did replace the glass with plexiglass.

i might move them later on.
